Playa Hermosa Reserve
Mar 2020 • Couples
The reserve on Playa Hermosa is beautiful. Depending on the time of day and if you listen carefully, you'll hear parrots and scarlet macaws flying over head. You can park your car by the side of the road and have a lovely picnic or enjoy a dip in the cool water. Pura Vida, Linda

Great turtle patrol with the best guide!
Nov 2018 • Friends
I was super impressed by the knowledgeable guide we got. It is obvious that he loves the beach and protected the local environment while understanding the locals desire/process to hunt eggs. Raul was incredible!

Refuge washed away
Aug 2014 • Family
We read the reviews and went out to see the refuge but when we got to the end of the road we knew something was not right as the farming showed more road where there was now sand and driftwood. It got washed away in a storm and is no more. The government has closed the beaches farther south and there is no more volunteers.

Turtles
Apr 2013 • Family
The refuge all the way at the end of the beach is a great trip through a one-lane dirt road, bobbing and weaving through palms. Turtle eggs in the ground so not much to see, but picked up a couple nice coconuts for later and made our way all the way to the river at the end of Hermosa beach.

Neat place
Jul 2012 • Couples
My wife and I visited this refuge during each of our last 2 trips to Costa Rica. Did not know about the turtle releases, but we saw lots of interesting birds, including a wood stork, lots of Northern Jacana's, Yellow Headed Caracaras, as well as many types of herons and egrets.
During rainy season you need a 4WD vehicle if you plan to drive through this refuge.

An amazing experience. Watch baby turtles make their way to the sea.
Jan 2012
We stumbled upon this Dec. 2011. We now take all of our guests here for a rare experience. The turtle release starts around early Dec. into early January. You can watch (maybe even help) dig up the turtles. Sometimes 50+ tutles in each nest. Then you'll be able to watch the release as they make their way to the sea. Great photo opportunites. Releases happen at dawn and at dusk. Great beach, not very many people. Bring drinks and snacks. The drive is a bit long down a dirt road. Great for bird and Iguana sightings. Be sure to leave a donation. It goes to a very good cause. Just in the last year we have seen the donation monies put to good use and necessary upgrades for their facility. We are moving back to the states and we will greatly miss spending our christmas day (and several other days) with the turtles. DON'T MISS THIS EXPERIENCE.

Sea turtle hatchling release a highlight for all ages!
Nov 2011
Our family was fortunate to spend a morning at Playa Hermosa Wildlife Refuge south of Jaco, watching the hatching of baby Olive Ridley turtles and participating in their release to the ocean to start their new lives. We all learned about the work being done at this hatchery and it was thrilling to watch the new turtles instinctively make their way to the water. Recommended for young and old and in between. Bring cameras and wear comfortable clothing.
