Real shame the place has gone downhill. Last visited 7 years ago, packed house, attentive staff, decent wine (it IS/WAS a winery after all) and great French cuisine. Went today...really no wine of their own anymore. They sell you Argentinian wine 4x of the price elsewhere. Food was HORRIBLE, raw fish thar was supposed to be fried and they argued about the fact that their overhead was so high that they have to sell inferior products at premium prices. Pretty location, but STAY AWAY!

A few weeks ago we went to visit the Chateau Defay on the 29th of December to do the wine tasting tour. We really enjoyed the wine tasting but the place is very dangerous. When we drove out of the vineyard we got robbed by 5 armed guys who take all our belongings. We tried to contact the owners of this Chateau but they never responded us. We drove to the police and they told us it happens often on the road near the Chateau. Including, they seem to know the guys and they are apparently from the gang Los Rebecca. Our tour guide (Alvaro Guillermo Andrade) at the chateau never warned us for the danger. It's unfortunate, but we will never go back here again. This area is really dangerous.

I also read the review about someone being robbed, didn't have that problem at all. Such a cool place, the castle was awesome! We were able to arrange a private shuttle for three people from Antigua and they waited while we did a tour and and tasted some wine. It was well worth the trip, and about 20 mins from Antigua.

The road to Chateau Defay is terrible, at least 3 to 5 kms. Is a kind of dangerous because you have to drive between 10 and 20 kms/hr, it seems an appropriate place for robbers to take advantage (don't even think travel this route after 5pm and don't take the route from Palin, use always the Antigua and Santa Maria one). The vineyard is a nice place but not expect something spectacular.

The weather is perfect and the wine just ok. Kindly people will welcome you and invite you to the wine tour (Q60 p/person including a wine tasting at the end). There is no problem in case you don't have to take the tour, you can walk and see the beautiful landscape and vineyard, and you can enjoy very limited glass of wine from Q30.00 (Moscatel is delicious) to Q60.00.

I think they could do it better if they had a better menu, some kind of cheese or desserts you can enjoy with the wine. But there isn't.

You definitely could take good pictures, enjoy the weather, the landscape and probably the wine tasting too.

I heard of this place from a friend and couldn't make it until now in an urge to visit unknown places in my country.
You must visit it during November, December for the weather and sunsets in Sacatepequez.
The road to Santa Maria de Jesus is really nice! But, from that town to the Chateau De Fay is unpacked road so you better take a high car (pickup or van)
There you find this place where you can see in persona the vision of a French visitor that beloved that Guatemala can have wine in its lands.
You can take a tour which right now is not in production but you will be able to enjoy its skylines. And it finish with wine degustation so yummy.
For me, the timing to visit was perfect. Middle of the day to make the tour and then have a delicious lunch. So you can leave the place in daylight.
And get back headed to Antigua to have a great night!!!

The Chateau Defay castle is a vineyard-restaurant, surrounded by nature and with architecture inspired by France; It is located in the municipality of Santa María de Jesús, Sacatepéquez, I would say about 40 minutes from Antigua Guatemala. They have a tour that costs Q.150, with which one learns about the processing of the vine, takes a tour of the property and has the opportunity to meet and taste 5 types of wines. I highly recommend the place.

10 years ago I went for the first time and now I'm going for the 2nd time. However, I want to leave you some observations. The staff treated us very well. They served quickly. But they could improve the collection and have better signage, that their staff be uniformed, not everything is the cashier ran from one place to another. Some of their uniforms were damaged and no one offered us avocados or came to the table to ask for our order and they were charging me less than what I asked for. The place is beautiful and they could include a bird tour for those of us who love birdwatching.

Nice place but slow service, not very good food and the wine is vinegar, it doesn't make up for the distance for what they offer.
