About
While resting on ancient foundations, Castell Coch (Red Castle) is relatively modern, the by-product of a vivid Victorian imagination, assisted by untold wealth. The Middle Ages fascinated the Victorians as much as the Victorians fascinate us today. The ‘eccentric genius’ William Burges was given free rein by his paymaster, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd marquess of Bute, to create a rural retreat to complement the opulence of his main residence, Cardiff Castle. Visitors can admire dazzling ceilings, over-the-top furnishings and furniture at Castell Coch, before a visit to the quaint on-site tearoom. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for unexpected closures, opening times, events, and site facilities.

What an amazing castle. Mike, one of the volunteers, gave us a brilliant tour, passionately telling us all about its history, from the Norman’s to present day. He really made the experience, we could have chatted with him for hours. The castle itself is beautiful, a perfect spot to visit!

We really enjoyed our visit to the Wonderland that is Castell Coch. A bit like wandering into a real life Disney Princess Castle. Although Castell Coch is not the original building the amount of wealth and research lavished on this "re-build" is stunning and the attention to detail brings to life a more opulent time. We really enjoyed wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere. The painted walls are so detailed that is worth spending time looking at them. We visited the wonderful tea shop too. Friendly staff, basic facilities, ell worth a visit. We were just disappointed to learn that we could not visit again at Christmas due to restricted opening.

This a a beautiful little castle not far from Cardiff. With the audioguide, it is definitely worth the price. The audioguide is well done. The castle is very beauitful. If arriving by train then walking, google will direct you the long way round, but there is a trail through the woods that cuts the walk down by 10+ minutes.

We really enjoyed this castle, the children (age 11 and 10) weren’t entirely keen to go and look around a “boring castle” but once there there they changed their minds and said the whole experience was very good and informative (they loved the podcast). It’s the most colourful interior decorated castle we’ve ever been to, we loved the free podcast to listen to whilst walking around which gave us the best experience due to the in depth knowledge and information of each room and the decor. A must visit!

A pad in the country for the Marquis finished in a certain style, and with humour abound. Thankfully Burgess had an eye on the original ruins and incorporated that into his architecture of a very distinctive building. Attended a wedding here many moons ago and was impressed then (thankfully this building has lasted longer than that marriage)! There is scaffolding about at present on the outer but that doesn't detract from your visit. And, it means that Cadw are looking after the old place.

My Welsh friend had been pretty dismissive about Castle Coch, but on a rainy day I suggested that we should give it a go. We were both very favourably impressed. The site is still undergoing some remedial work, but that is no reason to avoid it. Plenty of impressive sights and a fascinating history, all enhanced by an excellent commentary on hand-held electronic devices, included without any additional charge. The only notes of caution are that you must be happy to ascend some steep and narrow circular staircases, also it would be wise to go out of high season, since it could soon become uncomfortably crowded on the narrow passages. Very well worth a diversion from th M4!

What a pretty castle! I always wanted to come here and although there was scaffolding on the outside, it had a nice covering so it was unsightly to look at. Super pretty rooms and a quaint little cafe with home baked cakes. Well worth a visit!

A true fairy tale castle-but lots of steps. Interesting furnishings and displays. Take time to enjoy all the interior decorations--painting, ceilings, furniture. Amazing what lots of money and creativity can do together.

Beautiful castle definitely well worth a visit, as an English Heritage member for over 2 years you get free entry into Cadw locations. Interesting and eye catching decoration inside, we spent a couple of hours looking round. The audio guide is free and a must, there not many information boards. There is a shop and a tea room. Plenty of free parking.

What a treat this was! My friend and I have lived in Cardiff all our lives but never fully immersed ourselves in the history and splendour of Castell Coch. Touring the castle was a wonderful experience made incredibly more special by tour guide & volunteer, David who kindly offered to show us around the enchanted building. His enthusiasm and knowledge about the castle’s history and architectural foundation was excellent and made it one of the best excursions we have had right on our door step! Diolch again, David & Castell Coch!

We have driven past the castle that’s on the distance from the motorway, always looked fairytale like set in the heart of the mountains. the step drive up to the castle is amazing passing thought a small village then you get to the castle.
The castle itself from the outside is amazing its grand tower and grandness of the building once a magnificent castle with a moat.
We didn’t go inside as the admission charge I thought was quite expensive so we just had a walk around the outside of the castle taking amazing pictures. As the castle is high up you can see for miles breath taking views of the valleys and landscapes below, we had an amazing winter sunset with orange sky which was the perfect backdrop for the castle.

Excellent parking for able bodied and disabled. Staff friendly and helpful. We had a falafel, onion and hummus panini to share with 2 coffees for £11 in the cafe served by friendly staff. Will definitely go back to explore more of the grounds.

Very very disappointed, payed for family in advance so they didn't have to worry about cost of entrance as not having my funds them self's. I my self waited outside for them to come, and had I noticed how little was going on inside I would have suggested that we went elsewhere.
The child was booked in for 1230pm for father Christmas and didn't get in until 115 pm, told to go and wait in the next room and make an angel and a hat, but as a child of 20 months old he wasn't interested, love him. We did have a look around and only then realized how little was happening there.
Years ago you had Carol singers Christmas pudding, stirring and mulled wine and mulled cider. We Did go and had a look in the craft fair and to be honest everyone look so fed up we walk out.
Spoke to a very nice girl and asked why there wasn't much going on and was told health and safety wouldn't allow it these days!!!!.
Well lets just say we won't be back again for festive weekends no more.
As the picture shows not a bit festive 😔😴😡😡😡😡

It was our 43rd Wedding Anniversary on the 09th July and our miniature Jack Russell, Gitto’s 06th birthday. So we set off from Llandysul in Carmarthenshire in our motor home with Gitto and Taff, 9 month old Pembrokeshire Corgi. Being just off Junction 32 on M4, it was meant to be easy. However, small signposts for Castle Coch, ended up taking the wrong exits twice before finally arriving at the site. My wife being Welsh, she had always talked about it and having full membership of English Heritage, it was free admission. Parking the 4 berth motor home was not difficult as there was plenty of spaces, I hold a Blue Badge too. Firstly, we wanted to take the supposedly easy circular route lasting some 45 minutes. It didn’t take long to realise the arrows were pointing in all directions, the track was treacherous - steep uphills, downhill - making it a huge challenge for me. Fortunately I had my walking stick. Cutting a long story short, we were getting lost. There were many dog walkers to enquire from. It became very confusing and bewildering! Finally, it was a case of finding our way back to the motor home! We met the same dog walkers over and over again to be guided ! Sure enough, they were locals, easy for them. Our Pembrokeshire Corgi puppy was sitting down every time we stopped to enquire. It was gone about 3 long hours when we finally sighted the motor home. Dried and cleaned the dogs, I sat inside with the dogs while my brave wife went inside the castle. We had clocked some 15,000 steps on my Activity tracker!

Visited today for the umpteenth time, but this time with my kids. I love this place, even if it is a bit fake. It is a Victorian castle build to look like a medieval castle, so it is a lot better preserved than the genuine articles - but that is because it is not technically genuine. However it is a lovely building in a nice location, in beautiful condition inside and out. Today was better than ever as they had children's activities in two rooms and a punch and judy show. I thought my kinds would tolerate 30 mins at most, but we were there two and a half hours. There were staff in costume available to answer questions about the castle, and about history in general. I really enjoyed talking to them with my 8 year old daughter, who had plenty of questions. Entry fee was less than £30 for a family with up to 3 children.

I cannot fault it in any way, but I would point out that it is a Victorian building with no disabled access. The stairs are medieval style spiral staircases, which were never intended to be accessible. If you have limited mobility, you need to be aware of this as you could end up very disappointed by your visit.

Dropped in to the castle today while on a hike through the woods that surround the castle, reasonably priced (including the tearoom) and the staff could not have been more friendly. Everyone that we spoke to was incredibly helpful and polite.
Spent an hour wandering around the castle and to be honest we could have spent a lot longer, Cadw have done an exceptional job of helping you to interpret the history of the place.
The woods and hills around are exceptionally well waymarked and tidy, all in all an excellent experience.

Castell Coch requires an entry fee (for a specific time slot) which needs to be pre-booked through their website, before you can enter the premises . There's a small picnic spot right outside the castle for those Instagram worthy photo ops.

Dubbed as the fairytale castle, Castell Coch or Red Castle was built in the 19th century as a love sanctuary for the 3rd Marquess of Bute and his Lady. Architect William Burges built this 'summer house' ( yeah, wish I had a house like this) on the mediaeval remains of the original structure.

This place has been on our list for many years. Like, seemingly all, fantasy castles it is on the top of a steep approach and has many, many staircases, all of which are not what ancient knees and hips look forward to, so, when driving in, don’t do what I did at the prompting of my wife, and dive into the first (and lowest) car park section. There was plenty of room at the top of the hill!

There is no need to describe the place because it has been very well documented and, if it is one’s bag, one has already seen all the pictures, books and television programmes, so let us just say that, notwithstanding all the climbing and spiral (and other) staircases, I would not have missed out on this visit for all the tea in China. Ignore the complaining knees and hips, (one can always join the queue for new ones,) it is all worthwhile. The visit was enhanced by the little audio guide gadget handed over in exchange for the entrance fee and, more so, by the very knowledgeable staff who were only too keen to respond to queries and questions.

My wife found this on the internet as it was close to where we were staying. Great choice, well laid out. When we entered we were given an audio guide which we used in the various rooms to tell us the history of the place. The tour was well put together and easy to follow. Not too crowded we were able to go at our on pace and spend time in each room to take in all the different interesting items. Great gift shop also with some interesting items for sale.

I enquired before arrival if I needed to book. I was informed it was necessary, so I was not pleased when I turned up to be told I had to book a slot. After explaining I was informed otherwise, I was then told I had to wait 15 mins as a party had turned up & due to covid, limited numbers of visitors at any one time were in place. I hung around the small shop for ten minutes. You can imagine my surprise when a visitor just turned up at the pay kiosk & was allowed entry inside with no wait!
Anyway, after this annoyance I went around the castle.
Castell Coch is a Victorian aristocrat’s idea of a medieval castle, with a hotchpotch of interior styles. I have to say I just found it ‘OK’. One room looked neglected but the drawing room was my favourite. Cardiff Castle is ten times better, more centrally located & easier to access.
Castell Coch is a place to spend a good hour or so if you are in the area on a wet day, a fan of Victorian Gothic or the architect William Burges.
The cafe was closed, the shop was mediocre & staff distant. Rather disappointing on the whole. I found it hard to rate - it was better than average because it is unique, but it was a stretch to say ‘very’ good.
