The trail is off of Riesling Trail. The walk will take you about 90 minutes with a lot of interesting beautiful things to see. The village of Penwortham was founded in early 19th century by John Horrocks and that's why you can find this trail under both names : Horrocks and Penwortham. Horrocks house is still standing and can be seen. Easy access from Riesling Trail.

Well worth leaving the trail to take this loop. Good quality road surfaces and not too demanding. Some great cellar doors to visit with a lovely outside terraced restaurant at Skillogalee a highlight. Good wines to sample too, as were those at Kilikanoon (exceptional).

This detour takes you onto sealed roads past beautiful mature gum trees and into the wine cellars of Kilikanoon, Penna Lanes, Mitchell wines, Jeanneret wines and Skillagalee. Each of these wine cellars are worth stopping for. We shared a $10 wine tasting for 10 wines at Kilikanoon and ended up buying a mixed dozen because they were so nice. These were delivered to our local accommodation. At Skillogalee I had a beautiful afternoon tea which included a middle eastern orange syrup cake with a perfect quenelle of cream. This is a beautiful additional detour you can take whilst on the Riesling Trail.

We left the Clare Valley Reisling Trail at Penwortham to follow the John Horrocks Trail loop back to Sevenhill, with the hope of visiting a few wineries in this area. This loop is recommended for walking or cycling and we chose tho walk. We were surprise to find that although the trail is well sign posted, it is in some places quite dangerous for both cyclists and walkers as you are quite often required to walk on the quite narrow road, which at times can become busy with cars, trucks and busses. There are also many places that when walking it is impossible to face oncoming traffic due to the lack of a roadside verge, and poor oncoming visibility. Some of the wineries are also some distance off the main road making them more difficult to access. On a brighter note, there are great views especially around Skillogalee. I would hope that the local authority would further develop this trail and make it safer for walkers and cyclists alike as I believe there is great potential here.
