Old church on a hillside overlooking Ushguli village. It's in its own enclosure to keep the animals out. It has an inner church, quite atmospheric. We were told that there is still one monk and an apprentice that live in the next door building.

Very tiny church of which only one part was open when we were there, I guess. We had to leave our backpacks outside, in the rain. Monks/nuns were very angry at all the tourists all the time. Frescos and paintings were not worth it after all this hassle.

This restored landmark is one of the highlights of this country. The craftsmanship that went into the original is unbelievable for the era when it was constructed. It is well worth a visit.

The spectacular setting of this 9th century church with 10-12th century frescos, alone makes it a prime attraction. It stands at the mouth of the valley leading up to the Shkhara glacier, and views of the vast mountain can be had from the church compound. The church is tiny by some standards, but the frescos are much better than one would expect from such an isolated area. Get one of the monks in the adjacent monastery to let you in. Small niches in the outer walls of the compound have votive objects, flowers, and coins before small icons. It is a magical place.

Absolutely stunning views from this place on picturesque Ushguli and majestic glacier! I loved Ushguli... It seems like being thrown back in past.... Cute little village with narrow streets and super nice people! Cherry on the top of the cake? Cows and horses everywhere...

Yet another church!... but with a difference. This one is in an amazing setting high up in the Caucuses.
Worth a visit.

Amazing views, breathtaking mountains and beautiful church. Don’t go there when it’s 🌧 - dangerous road. But you have to see it)

Embedded in extremely beautiful nature with a splendid view of Mt Shkhara, Lamaria church from the ninth century and later is dedicated to St Mary, whose day the Svanetians celebrate here in August. The tiny church is surrounded by a wall. It is quite unobtrusive from the outside. Inside there are a few faded frescos and a beautiful one of Jesus Christ which is better preserved. As no natural light can get into the church, it has always been lit by candles only. Therefore it is very black inside. The atmosphere is very quiet, holy and mysterious.

After a difficult drive from mestia getting there you realize it was well worth the effort.
You can ascent through the village and return on the car road for an easier climb.
Very old church which was once a pagan temple standing in a valley leading up to the Shkhara glacier, so you will get amazing views.
Go inside the small church to see the paintings!
