We didn't know what to expect. But never expected this.
At first we drove into a little street with already beautiful ceramics stored at the outside of a house or store.
We needed to park the car somewhere so decided to drive a little further. There was a large olive tree, that is used as a roundabout, with cute restaurants around it.
So we parked the car and first wanted to drink something, it was very hot outside. Everyone was so nice and ofcourse they are nice they want costumers but they were really interested in us as a family.
Okay, drinks were done now some exploring. Well you can say buying!
There are so many different stores with all different and sometimes the same stuff. All made out of ceramics en they all love to do it.
It's gorgeous. There are also a few different stores, they are very clever because that's wat you need in a village like this, some diversify.
Nice restaurants to have a lunch and amazing view. You can walk trouhg the village all the way up till there are no stores anymore.

Perfect place to go when you want to buy stuff, have a talk with the people ore just something to do.

Our tour guide Vincent was extraordinary! He picked up my sister & me from our hotel in Rethymno and drove us to the quaint village of Margarites. We visited a traditional yet modern ceramic workshop, Keramion, where we met the owner, George Dalamvelas. There, we had the opportunity to see George in action: modeling the raw clay into a beautiful ceramic vessel!
We then walked the beautiful village & witnessed the daily life of the locals. Afterwards we toured the gorgeous valley and gorges to the Holy Monastery of Arkadi, renowned as a “symbol of self-sacrifice, freedom & heroism during the period of the Cretan Revolution against the Turkish domination in 1866.”
Vincent took us to a well known Taverna, Drimos, I believe, in the Postos Gorge where we ate the most memorable Cretan cuisine- lamb, olives, cheese, locally grown vegetables, etc.-so delicious and savory!
An after-meal hike was in order, and it was so beautiful to see the stream, the waterfalls, the flora, & the tiny Greek Orthodox church built into the side of a mountain.
This personal tour exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend Vincent for his knowledge, hospitality, thoughtfulness, & patience.

A roadtrip through gorgeous nature will satisfy all your senses. Fresh air, beatiful flowers, wild birds it's a must if you want to enjoy nature especially in spring. The little village Margarites is also known for the pottery. Don't forget to grab lunch in the tavern of Mantalos. Home-taditional cooking at its best!

Being the most important center of ceramics industry in Crete, this is a real must-see.
Plenty of possibilities to see all kinds of pottery, the classic way they were made.
Enjoy the small streets away from the main street. Very beautiful colourful sights, a delight for making pictures. Enjoy the rest and take your time to enjoy a cold drink or a hot drink, or a simple meal, in the shade of the trees, with a commanding view over the valley. One of the nicest and peaceful places I have ever seen.

Visited Margarites as part of the Road train trips from Panormos. Beautiful little village where many of the residents are potters. Lovely little shops selling their wares, and very very reasonably priced. Recommended.

Quaint village w/a handful of worthy pottery shops, however, quite a few shops had mediocre merchandise. Very friendly people and a lovely outdoor restaurant in the middle of town w/lovely mulberry trees, which created a magical setting overlooking a pretty valley.

Margarites is a lovely little village in the hills east of Rethymno. It is famous for its pottery, and ceramics, and is a lovely place to visit.

Being a ceramic artist, I was interested in visiting Margarites.
It was so beautiful to walk around the narrow streets of the village and visiting some of the ceramic ateliers. I wished I had more time to spend there.
Prices for pottery ware are more than reasonable and cheaper then anywhere in Rethymnon area and Chania area.
There is a beautiful family owned restaurant with the most amazing view that I recommend when you want to have a rest. "Taverna mentalos"

Took the Little Train from centre of Panormos to Margarites
It's around a 4 hour round trip & great value . You get some great views , a stop at a working pottery and time for lunch and a wonder round the lovely hill village of Margarites.
Great value but the wooded seats get a bit uncomfortable towards the end and the commentary in 6 languages is a bit over the top
