Strict restrained beauty and unique charm

In the north-eastern part of Ashtarak (Aragatsotn region) among the crooked streets and low houses stands out the slender silhouette of the Church of Marine (Miriam). It was built in XIII century and in XIX century was supplied with a bell tower, both visible behind the remains of large basalt walls.
This is a typical cross-domed structure with two-storeyed side-chapels. The entrances are from the west and south, where on façade placed a solar clock and on high stony pedestal stands interesting ancient khachkar.
The church looks modest enough, but it’s beautiful with strict restrained beauty, forming its unique charm

An average Armenian church, unremarkable and nothing special. Go see Ashtarak's other historical sites first.

A very average Armenian church. It was a nice stop, but I'd recommend visiting this church only if you need to fill time and only if you're already seen Ashtarak's better sites like the Ashtarak Bridge, Saint Sarkis Church, the Old Bathhouse, and the two partly ruined churches on the gorge: Spitakavor and Tsiranavor.
