The direct trains take you in two hours from Switzerland's capital Berne to Domodossola, the first town in Italy, on the way to Milan. Have a glass of prosecco at the medieval market square and watch original Italian life: No cars, many children playing and proud grandmothers drinking coffee with their friends. The town counts only 19000 inhabitants, so many people know each other, and they will welcome you with a warm ciao. My favourite places are the tower turned into a small hotel managed by Hotel Sciolla, Osteria del Boh for excellent food and atmosphere and the Saturday morning market, all in the historic center. It's not a tourist place, but 100% Italy. Come in June when they have free open air concerts right in front of the railway station, or in December to the Xmas market. Hiking into the nearby valleys is great, but in only 20 mins. the train will take you to world famous Stresa by Lake Maggiore, where they are used to tourists and where everything costs twice as much as in Domodossola, my favorite.

Being the owner of the famous bed and Breakfast, La Casa del Giardiniere, near Lake Maggiore, we are constanly being asked for places to go that are a bit off the tourist track.
Well only about 40 minutes drive from Stresa, down the super strada to Domodossola and you arrive into another world. The journey is littered with Alpine hillside villages, all full of interesting.
Using Domodossola as your hub venture into the mountains via Crodo, famous for it's mountain breads, cheeses, and yogurts...there is a lovely shop and cafe where you could buy provisions for a picnic. Another 30 minutes up the mountain tracks brings you to Baceno, where you have a choice one road forks to the right and takes you to the Toce river waterfalls in Val Formazza, spectacular the highest in Europe, plus some stunning walks.
My favourite is to take the left fork at Baceno and head for a circular walk around Alpe Devero taking in the picturesque village of Crampiolo...I have not had a guests who hasn't returned brimming with thanks, and photographs to remember for a life time. Believe me there awaits a rare treat in store. For me a day in Alpe Devero is loke takinga weeks holiday, the air, the silence, the scenery..bellissimo

Take your time to visit this lovely border town, which is not just "the big Saturday market crowded with Swiss people or a train stop on the international railway line"!
There's a lot to be discovered! The old town is traffic free and full of old, elegant buildings and 15th-century porticoes. Lovely cafés and restaurants everywhere. Palazzo Silva is a beautifully preserved renaissance building right in the town centre. Hire a taxi (a 5 minutes' drive) and get to the Sacro Monte Calvario, a Unesco world heritage site with many chapels decorated with terracotta and wooden statues. Over there you can also see the ruins of a medieval fortress, a convent and there's a nice view over Domodossola!

Only visited here to use the F.A.R.T. Tramway to Locarno in Switzerland and enjoyed the brief visit. Very friendly people and this would be great place to base yourself for so many day trips to places like Val Formazza, for the Falls and Crodo for some of the worlds best bread. However do not miss the trip on this spectacular tramway. The views are outstanding and route has to be seen to be believed. No one would attempt to build this today. One word of warning though and that is, Do not take photographs of the view from the Swiss/Italian Border. We were told in very strong terms that it is not permitted by the Guards at the crossing point but given no reason. The snow made this trip even more spectacular. If in the Domodossola area then make this trip as Locarno too is well worth a visit. Like wise if in Locarno then do the trip in the other direction.

Here on a Saturday for the local market which takes over the entire town. Lots of stalls, some tatt, but a few gems. A number of good little bakeries dotted about. Buy some of the local pastries or biscuits for a tasty nibble later. Plenty of cafes, many of which offer free nibbles with your drinks. Locals and tourists clearly come to the market from miles around. I came here to catch the Centovalli railway.

People tend to just see Domodossola from the train, and think it a boring place. But venture out into the village and find the Old Town - it is a fantastic experience of well-kept medieval houses, little alleys, small cafes and gelaterias. Finish the explorations with lunch on the town square and loads of ice-cream. There is also well-worth hiking in the area, as well as bike tracks.

We decided to visit Domodossola during our stay in lago maggiore since it's not that far. It's a very small town but rather picturesque. The main square is a little gem on a beautiful sunny day. The surrounding hills and mountains are amazing.

weekly streetmarket on saturday's, but overloaded with clothes and bag's. The restaurants arround the railway should be avoided. Lot of german people coming for shopping and crowding the streets.

We spent 1,5 hours in Domodossola today between arriving by train from Locarno and leaving to go by train to Stresa (by the way, a trip worth doing!). We went wondering about, drinking coffee and eating lunch (see my review of Trattoria La Motta) and had a very nice time in this town. I have no idea if there is lots more to do and see but this town was really worth wondering about

If I come to Domodossola from Lucerne, how long should I spend on Domodossola ? Is it too rush to get to the town at noon and go back to Domodossola at evening? Or I have better stay in the town one night?
Written April 21, 2019
Hi! The centre of Domodossola is tiny and cute and not too big. The way to get there is a little bit slow expecially if you are giong to get there throgh Locarno that is the shorter way: surely the street is slow, full of curves and plenty mountains, but panoramic, romantic. I think you've better stay one night. We (from Como) staid one night in a small town nearby called Santa Maria Maggiore (15 km from Domodossala). Enjoy!

Ciao!
Francesca

whats to see on a Thursday day trip
Written January 21, 2015
There is not an awful lot to see and do here but there are some pleasant squares and narrow lanes in the town centre. Stunning scenery around. Numerous places to eat and drink for reasonable money. If you have time, some or all of the Centovalli railway journey is very much worth doing.
