- Gaynor H5 contributionsWonderful, refreshingly welcome visitDriving home from Shrewsbury and stopped here for a snack. Plenty of designated parking. Lovely farm experience with chickens running free outside. Welcomed by a lovely lady who was busy making everyone feel welcome. Tables lovely and clean. We decided on the full English breakfast and a toasted tea cake with coffees. Everything was lovely and fresh and nothing was too much trouble ie extra milk (coffee was exceptional). Could have stayed longer as it was so relaxing with lots of information to take in re how they are diversifying the farm. When we left the cafe we visited the farm shop and bought the most amazing beef joint. Lovely experience and we will definitely be returning even though it is an half hour drive from home, well worth the travel. - Simon W3 contributionsBernice is wonderful. This was our 3rd visit to the farm. We really enjoy going into the cafe, the service we have had from Bernice each time has been amazing. She’s very attentive and personable and has even lent her hand to a bit of babysitting with our youngest as we tucked into our lunch on a brief quiet spell in the cafe. She makes the visit very enjoyable and the farm are very lucky to have her as part of thier team.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 26, 2024

Yurt from hell.
Heatwave and Met Uk adverse weather warning all week 🌞🌞🌞. Arrived at yurt 40c++ with young children. No Windows and highly insulated. Despite the extreme high temperatures being foreseeable by owners nothing was done to mitigate this. This meant we could not enter to sleep until perhaps midnight with young children and little shade outside, so we packed up noting the gas fridge would not cool in three hours while there. Owners offered some bunk bed type accommodation with strict covid rules as area shared with a large group of people learning there all week. However, I am extremely clinically vulnerable to covid and this makes the alternative accommodation totally unacceptable as well as incomparable and ridiculously not what we booked. So despite a covid guarantee being in place, no extreme and unsafe temperatures consideration was made. The owners would not consider any type of refund, so unfortunately despite my very supportive attitude towards community initiatives such as this I cannot give anything but the lowest score rating. I suggest buying portable air conditioning and extension cable for this rare extreme temp situation or graciously cancel booking until another time as you would if covid struck. We left and lost our entire holiday booking paid up front. Also note to reach the yurt you had to negotiate an electric fence and with young children that is unsafe and should be pre-advised. We are however from rural area, so managed this but should be mentioned.

Dear Neil and family,
Thank you for the review and I am sorry that you chose not to spend your holiday here on the farm. The heatwave is unusual and effectively a yurt is a tent and all campers know tents do get hot when the weather is particularly sunny.
Being an off grid unit in the corner of a field any form of additional cooling is just not possible (nor in-line with the environmental ethos of the yurt). As discussed the unit would cool as the evening had drawn in and you needed to give it time, by leaving the two stable doors open.
Our guests that departed that morning had toddlers and experienced the same weather, and they had a most enjoyable stay with us. We did recognise that sleeping in the heat was a particular concern to you and offered the private sleeping quarters in the very large Straw Lodge building which is extremely cool and fully 'on grid', yet still being an eco-build, with you continuing your yurt experience of sitting under the parasol taking in the farm views and enjoying outdoor cooking/eating at the yurt area. Many of our guests would have jumped at an opportunity to stay in the Straw Lodge as well as using the facilities at the yurts.
It was only the communal areas in the Straw Lodge that we advised you could not use as other vulnerable groups were using this space during the day. Due to our strict Covid policies we would not permit mixing of groups. With the fully private bedroom and bathroom spaces offered in the Straw Lodge, the Covid risk to you was no more than in the yurt itself. We understood that your preference was a hotel and we felt we had offered solutions to such unusual and exceptional circumstances. The weather is something we cannot control and our guests typically adapt, be it heavy rain, snow or the sunshine.
With regards to the electric fence, it is hooked with an easy to open fully-insulated hook to make the field easily and safely accessible for our visitors. It is all fully sign posted and is used by visiting families and vulnerable adults on site on a regular basis.
We are extremely disappointed that you left within a few hours as we were confident that you could have a wonderful time here with us and we did take all steps to try and resolve the issues for you. We do take great pride in our guest experience here and we are truly sorry that we could not meet your expectations on this extremely unique occasion.

It was the first time we were able to meet after the covid-19 lockdown, to celebrate our friends' golden wedding. We had a barbecue in the garden, keeping social distancing and all fresh food from Fordhall. The pork pies, sausages, burgers with apple and fresh strawberries to finish were all delicious and got the thumbs up from our guests. I would recommend any barbecue planners to stock up from Fordhall! Let's hope for plenty more sunshine to come!

I arranged for my late mother’s Farewell Tea Party.
From making the arrangements with Tara to the Cafe staff on the day, all was never too much trouble.
The room above the tea rooms were lovely set out to accommodate all of friends and family.
The cake buffet was a success as all the cakes were enjoyed by all!
Having a tea party style in natural environments is the best choice.
So many people had enjoyed their time together with good cake and tea instead of using public houses to host Wakes.
On leaving a visit to the shop and butchers is a must. Sausage rolls are tasty!

We stopped here for brunch on our way to Shrewsbury. I excepted breakfast to be great and it didn’t disappoint. The quality was superb and the portion size perfect. Enough to fill us up for the day but not over the top to make us feel uncomfortable! Tea and cappuccino were lovely too.
Friendly and hospitable staff and nice comfortable ambiance.
Farm shop is well stocked though we couldn’t buy too much as it was in the car all day!
Definitely be back for cafe and shop!

We stopped off for a quick coffee and fancied the toast basket, described as 'selection of local breads served with Welsh butter and organic jam or marmalade'.
The basket arrived with what looked like one type of bread, 5 corners of bread, very dry as when spreading the butter it broke into pieces. Really think £3.95 is a bit rich for a bit of old dry toast.
First and last visit as we're really disappointed.

We had lovely visit this afternoon with our three children (3, 6 and 8) There was a little mossling workshop on which was fab! Our children really enjoyed learning about peat moss! Pete and the lovely lady ( sorry can't remember her name) were great with them, so interesting! The shop and cafe are lovely although we didn't eat there, but would love to come back another time. The piggies were great to watch also. Thank you

We were staying locally and popped in to see what the place was like. It's amazing. Fab walks and lots to see and do. The history of the place is enough to make me want to visit but we truly loved it. Great farm shop with delight produce and the cafe is a delight. Really tasty teacakes and coffee. The staff are really lovely and friendly too. This is going to be our go to place for food.
Loads of events going on too. Live theatre when we visits too.

Are the trails pram friendly? I had a quick look but couldn't see an answer..
Written May 2, 2021
Hello!
Our trails are across farmland and so access can be a bit bumpy. An all terrain pushchair will get through, but a standard pram would struggle. It would be easier with a sling if possible.

Do we need to book for Sunday lunch?
Written January 4, 2019
Hello,
You are very welcome to book for Sunday Lunch, but there is no requirement to do so.
We recommend booking if you are a large group, to ensure we have the tables to accommodate you.
Warm regards

Dear Susan,
Yes dogs on leads are more than welcome on our farm trails and in our café. However, they are not allowed to go into the farm shop and butchery - there is too much temptation in there for them!
We look forward to seeing you at Fordhall soon

Would this be a good place to visit with an 11 month old , do you have an animal petting ? Thanks
Written June 4, 2017
Hi Christy, I'm afraid we don't have animal petting as we are a working farm.
However, you can view the pigs and chickens, and take a walk in the fields to see the sheep and cows.
We have a musical washing line in our community garden, together with willow done, sea saw and a giant pig to climb.
We also have Betty the tractor to play on for the larger ones and a toy kitchen resides outside the café for children to play with whilst you eat.
I hope that answers your question.
We look forward to seeing you, kind regards

Hi Jill, yes we do have gluten free options in our café, including home made cakes (flourless), gluten free bread (for soups and sandwiches) and gluten free porridge. Our soups never contain any gluten, plus we have a range of meals that naturally contain no gluten, including our homemade baseless quiche.
The farm shop will also provide gluten free sausages and burgers, although these need to be ordered in advance (occasionally there are some in stock in the freezer).
I hope that answers your question and if you have any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Happy New Year
