About
The octagonal open wooden gazebo with a diameter of 6 meters and a height of 10 meters was built on a high brick plinth in 1900-1901. The gazebo was built at the expense of the merchant Ivan Leshchinsky according to the project of the architect Matviy Shchavelyov. The building is decorated with columns, carved cornices and roof spiers. Outwardly, it resembles an unusual openwork building. The ornament of the Altanka contains coded symbols of Trypillia culture, pagan symbols of the sun and procreation. At the same time, the symbols of Christianity and Judaism are intertwined with them. During the revolution of 1905-1907, the Altanka was set on fire several times, and in 1913 it was rebuilt. The Altanka became a symbol of the city after the liberation of Sumy in September 1943, thanks to a photo by a front-line photojournalist. Today, the gazebo is an integral part of the image of Sumy and the city's business card.

A symbol of Sumy
May 2018 • Family
It is not so much to look at, but a symbol of Sumy. Some 430 years ago some guys found 3 bags of gold, That was enough money to start building the city.

Sumy citizens are very proud of their Altanka!

I like the little park surrounding it but for me, the Altanka is just a pretty gazebo in a pretty park. I've tried to find out from the locals what makes this so special for them but it appears there is no historical significance, they just like the place. Ok, I can go with that!

Altanka is very beautiful. It's now white and very pretty, also historical - it's from the 19th century! You should definitely take a photo in there!

The Altanka is an attractive structure in a park in the middle of Sumy. Good background for a picture.

A Walk in the Park
Aug 2015
Great place to walk through, blotted by the lower starting point of MacDonalds and by the fact that many Ukrainians think MacDonalds is a typical Scottish restaurant, and to make even worse think Trump is Scottish. But the music of the many buskers the tinkling of the fountains and the numerous flower sellers, oh and of course the most beautiful girls in the World, make this a joy to behold.

The title place in heart of the city
Sep 2015 • Family
This arbor is much more one of the city symbol rather then place to rest. However, recently old piano painted in national colors appeared inside, so kids enjoy playing their first music there. According to the legend, this arbor was built without any nails - well, you may try to check, but Altanka was painted so many times in different colors so the wood is covered by thick painting layers at the moment.
