About
The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda Dujiangyan Base is a post-earthquake reconstruction project in Sichuan Wolong Nature Reserve funded by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. It is 760 mus and close to the Giant Panda Habitat World Nature Heritage Area. The Base is dedicated to the conservation, research and education in the giant panda disease prevention and control, wild rescue, international cooperation and public science education.

It was so much fun to see real pandas. Can really recommend to do this one time in life.
Tour was so nice organized by "Clara". Pick up at hotel, drive around 1.5 h to the panda resort, take some rest and eat lunch and then watch the river side. She always explained to us some more details during the complete trip.

Wonderful experience seeing the very peaceful pandas eating away. They are one of the world's most lovable creatures. A few were playing, others resting, while the majority were eating.

Wow! Everything we dreamed of, and more form our day as a Volunteer.
Left Chengdu city at 0700, and arrived promptly at 0830 for a 0900 start and registration.
After donning out overalls myself and my wife were assigned an enclosure to clean, which involved cleaning up the poop, sweeping up and hosing down.
Then we were brought bamboo trees which we broke up and placed in the enclosure.
We then had an hour to wander around and look at the 25 or so Pandas here.
After this we were able to hand feed a Panda carrots and Panda cake - amazing - you will never get this close to a Panda. They are so gentle!
Then it was lunchtime - provided by the Base to all volunteers, basic hot Chinese fayre which was tasty.
Plenty of time to look around the Store before the afternoon session, which firstly involved breaking up more bamboo for the hungry pandas, then another chance to hand feed a Panda!
Finally, we made some Panda cake which were going to be baked for the next day, and there was a brief explanation of the ingredient etc.
We finished at around 3.30 to 4pm.
for £80 GBP I would highly recommend this experience.
Tip - remember you nave to get a health form filled in prior to arrival.
We did this via our local GP in the UK - which they do charge for.
I was charged £25, another of our party was charged £100.
Some parts of the form can be left blank, don't worry about it being fully completed.
We sent our forms and passports pages off to our guide who sent them onto Dujianyan before we arrived.
Take your passport on the day too.
We didn't do the cuddle a panda experience - not worth it and you get a better experience feeding them at a fraction of the cost!
Final tip - wear waterproof shoes/boots if volunteering as feet get soaked when cleaning the enclosures.

The panda park is very nice and the pandas seem well cared for so worth it to visit if you’d like to see them while in Chengdu. The volunteer program is a total scam though, so save your money. Your day literally consists of cleaning up panda poop (think mucking a horse stall), breaking pieces of bamboo on the road, watching a BBC documentary, and eating a mediocre cafeteria lunch with the park staff. And you actually pay money for this...definitely not a good value in my opinion having just done it a couple weeks ago. The only actual contact you have with the pandas is through a cage (you have a 10 second blip where you hand a piece of bamboo to a panda in a cage). 10 seconds out of an 8 hour day. Seriously, save your money on the volunteering and just visit the park.

I love pandas and was so excited to see them!! My friend and I decided to do the full day volunteer program, since we wanted to be close to the pandas. We heard from all our friends that this was THE THING to do in Chengdu... but I was disappointed with the lack of service and organization with the staff,
For starters, I went on a busy / crowded weekend in July. This volunteer program was overbooked (what is the point of having a reservation if any number of people can join??) Anyway, they put way too many people in a group so each everyone waited around. For example, when we were cleaning the cage, there were about 4 of us to a cage... half of us stood there, half of us kind of did work? We finished early (of course) and had about 1.5 hours to roam around the breeding center.
After lunch, we were supposed to prepare the panda bread. But instead, we waited in the sun for about 30 mins. I asked the staff member what we were waiting for. She replied with "we are waiting for the food to feed the panda". then I asked... "what are we feeding the panda...?" She replied with "Bamboo. A truck brings the bamboo from the North." After 30 mins, another staff member came running in with panda bread (surprise) and chopped bamboo. I asked the staff member again... "so, where's that truck full of bamboo??" She didn't answer my question.
At 3'oclock, we made the panda cake... by making the panda cake, I mean we spent about 5 mins taking some doughlike substance and shaping them into 2 circles. I'm pretty sure they just smashed the dough back to be used for the next day volunteers.
For a program that happens every day, there was lack of organization... everywhere. For example, when we took pictures with the panda, there was no line. Everyone was kind of in a huddle waiting and rushing to be next. After about 20 seconds, the staff member would frantically yell at the person to get out and the next person to take the photo.
This center is worth a visit, duh... because pandas are awesome. Just be cognizant of the volunteer program. What did we do, for said amount price? We fed the panda about 10 bamboo (twice), cleaned the cage for about 30 mins, rolled some bread for 5 mins, had lunch and watched a 30 min long movie. This program is from 9 AM - 3 PM. You do the math.

We visited Chengdu so that we could go to the Dujianyan Panda base - specifically to participate in the panda keeper for a day program. It was a let down, considering the cost and the effort. It is no longer possible to get a photo with a panda anymore (for RMB2000). This has been discontinued, but still advertised by some travel agencies when we booked.
There are a number of travel agencies who offer the panda keeper volunteer program. They are all offering the identical package - a transfer from Chengdu to Dujianyan (about 90 minute drive each way), and a translator/guide for some sections of the day. Each group had a guide with them. I don't think it would be possible to do the tour without a guide unless you speak Chinese. Also, it would be difficult to get to the base for the 9am start without a driver.
Irrespective of which tour agency you book with, it is the identical program as it's run by the panda base, not the tour agency. Note that some agencies include the 'volunteering fee' in their price and some don't.
There are about 20-30 or so people participating in the program. It's pretty crowded with many of the volunteers in each other's way. The program of the day goes like this:
1. Sign in and get a T-shirt for the first 15 minutes.
2. Next, you go and clean out the panda cage (removing the old bamboo, scraping up the poo, hosing out the cage and placing new bamboo into the cage. The pandas had already been removed from the cage by the time you get there. This section of the day takes about 45 minutes.
3. Next, we walked around and saw the panda exhibits in their enclosures through the park for 60-90 minutes as you would at a zoo. This is the same as you would if you purchased a regular entry to the park.
4. Next, you go back to the panda cage and put on a plastic glove. Each person then gets three (exactly three) carrot sticks to feed to the panda through a steel cage. The zoo keeper is present to make sure that you don't reach in and touch the panda. This takes about 5-10 minutes for all people in your group to feed their three carrot sticks to the panda.
5. Lunch - this is not bad. You eat in the staff canteen. It's Sichuan food. About 45 minutes.
6. Another 45-60 minutes of walking around the panda exhibits. This part was boring as we'd already seen all the pandas in the park before lunch.
7. You're taken into one of the rooms to watch a BBC documentary about pandas (60 minutes).
8. Walk back to the panda cages and feed the pandas (identical way as before) three pieces of panda cake. (15 minutes).
9. Making panda cakes. This consisted of taking a handful of pre-made cake dough and shaping into a cake shape and placing on a tray. (1 minute).
That's it. Then we drove the 90 minutes back to Chengdu.
There is no reason this why experience could not be shortened down into half a day by removing the dead time and documentary. The only contact you have with a panda is about 60-90 seconds of handing a carrot stick or slice of cake through a cage.
Considering the cost (RMB2000 each) and the effort, it's not worth it. In terms of viewing the pandas, we preferred the research base in Chengdu, which although crowded, was 60RMB for a taxi and RMB55 each for entry.

I highly recommend to arrive early in the morning (I arrived at 9am - opening). Firstly, the pandas are more active in the morning and this is one of the times during the day that they will be on the ground eating their bamboo (after eating most pandas will climb up a tree to rest, many did so around 10:15am, however there are definitely still others eating after this point). Secondly, there are very few people at this time (tour groups haven't arrived, there's less screaming).
From Chengdu take the high speed train from Xipu station (10 yuan). Get off at Qingchengshan stop (the last stop) and then take bus 102 (walk left after exiting the station), which will stop right in front of the Dujiangyan Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
I had done extensive research into the volunteering program as I'm passionate about nature conservation and wildlife. This being said, the price I kept finding for one person was too expensive (～1,500 yuan + 700 yuan donation at the door), so I opted to do a regular visit (56 yuan or 28 yuan for students). I'm very happy I did so, because personally I don't know how much more I could've gotten from the experience through the volunteer job (however, the hand feeding would have been unique). Arriving at 9am I walked around the reserve very slowly, which took about an hour and a half.
There are around 15-20 pandas at this base. I opted for this one over the larger Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (in Chengdu, near metro stop) as I felt the aforementioned looked a lot more touristy and busy.
One area I think they could improve is offering more educational opportunities for those with a regular admission ticket.

Travelled with wife, six year old daughter and baby son. We had booked the panda photo. I had appreciated this was about £200 for twenty second slot. What I had not appreciated was this was per person so our 20 second booking would have cost £600 to include all three of us. I tried to discuss with the administrator who really had no interest in anything other than taking £600 off me which in the end I refused her offer.
The park itself has good viewing areas but for our family panda base in Chengdu was much better, more pandas, much easier to walk with a pushchair, and you can see the pandas interacting with one another, at this location we only saw solitary pandas.
Overall we were very much looking forward to visiting this place but it was a massive disappointment.

For those of you that are going to visit the pandas be advised that you can no longer do the "hug a panda " experience it it no longer available

Well... what a day! I honestly cannot believe how amazing today has been. It exceeded my expectations by far.
Organising - I was able to contact the panda centre at pandaeducatecenter@163.com. They are very quick at replying. I would like to make it known that you are expected to have a health form signed by a doctor, which I fortunately managed to get. I think with a tour operator they manage to do something to get around this, but I was a little tight for cash, so decided to do it all myself.
I had previously enquired about doing the volunteer programme but when I booked my flights, I realised I wouldn't have had time to do this so decided for the more expensive photo opportunity at 1800 yuan. Volunteering is 700 Yuan.
Travel - I stayed in a hostel in Chengdu, which was cheap and did exactly what I needed it for. (Chengdu Mix Hostel) Only 40 Yuan.
I got a taxi to Xipu train station and bought my tickets online in advance from CTrip. (10 yuan for 1 way)
I got the train to Mt. Qingcheng (Qingchengshan) It didn't take long (around 35 mins) and it was lovely to see so much greenery, unlike the other cities I had been to in China.
You will be approached by taxi drivers when you come out of the train station - I took one as I was a little stuck for time but there are buses available. I did get a little ripped off (20 yuan) but needs must!
The centre - When I arrived at the centre, it was very clean and it makes you so so excited as you know once you're past the main entrance all the pandas are there! When I arrived I told them I was there for the photo and they were very welcoming and I wasn't charged the 50 yuan entrance fee. I was taken into a side room where I paid and signed a form. I had about 20 minutes of free time before the photo opportunity, so sped off to have a look whilst the pandas were active.
I came back and was given overalls and we then proceeded to the panda. We were given gloves and shoe covers and then in pairs we were invited into the enclosure for the photo. A lovely employee, took my photo and also a video within my 20 second time there. When I was given my phone back, she had taken over 50 photos, so I was pleased. Afterwards, we went back to the room and were given a panda t shirt and an appreciation certificate.
I then went wandering through the park which was lovely and clean and it was great to see the pandas living in such good conditions. Lots of trees and things for them to climb on and play with.
Unfortunately, with an issue earlier that morning I arrived a little late, so missed their most active parts, as after the photo a lot of the pandas had gone to sleep.
There are some other visitors that are noisy, when there are signs specifically asking them not to be... but these are not enforced.
I then left and got the 102 bus back to the train station, which cost me 2 yuan. This stop is located on the opposite side of the road to the centre and a little to the right. There is a blue sign. The ride took 15 minutes.
I'm sorry this has been a little long but it can be a tad time consuming trying to figure everything out on your own! I would say, you could definitely do this on your own without a tour guide, and save yourself a heck of a lot of money!
I know it seems steep for the photograph but it's been a highlight of my life and this is the only place in the world you can do this!!!!!

I then left and got the 102 bus back to the train station, which cost me 2 yuan. This stop is located on the opposite side of the road to the centre and a little to the right. There is a blue sign. The ride took 15 minutes.
I'm sorry this has been a little long but it can be a tad time consuming trying to figure everything out on your own! I would say, you could definitely do this on your own without a tour guide, and save yourself a heck of a lot of money!
I know it seems steep for the photograph but it's been a highlight of my life and this is the only place in the world you can do this!!!!!

In all honesty, I am happy if the handling of the pandas is stopped for good. Granted that they all super cute and cuddly, but also, unlike most animals, very delicate, prone to diseases and quite endangered. Moreover, the prices for the panda pictures/cuddling were exhorbitant, in the order of $800 a person. I am sure you can almost get the same rewarding experience by volunteering to be a keeper for a day at Dujiangyuan base, and it does not cost nearly as much.

Hi dear... It was my dream to hold a Panda Baby too. I couldn't hold the 1 year old Panda Baby because the baby was too big. So I sat right next to the Panda and was able to touch the Panda Baby. It was only for 20 seconds. You may google the information. Last I heard when my friends went visit, they shut down this program. It's off and on. Check with the local tours who offer this private tour. Good Luck.

Not really - and a taxi might take you there - but we heard another visitor having trouble getting a taxi back. I’d try and arrange a transfer with your hotel.

The weather is cold but it's worth to go there. Pandas are really cute. You can take photos and feed them. It's a wonderful experience.
However, please check and confirm with the organisation if you can hold the panda. I went there on Nov 21,2018. I could do all stated in the website except holding panda. It's a bit disappointed for me. Yet, I am no regret to go there. You will love and indulge yourself after visiting them.

We visited in the summer, not sure the weather in February. You book the holding of the panda when you are there, it is a donation and you pay in cash. There are age restrictions so please check with them as one child was turned away even though they had booked the volunteer program. Can’t remember the age, possibly age 9/10
