More than just the giant sleeping Buddha
It is impressive that the sleeping Buddha is still so well kept even though the statute was created by the Dangxiang people (an ethnic group that was wiped out by the Mongols in the 1300s) with wood and clay over a thousand years ago in the Western Xia dynasty. But the stories behind the Buddha and the temple are also very interesting. Although we didn’t hire a tour guide for our visit, there was a retired high official visiting, and the temple office provided him with a well-trained curator dressed in ancient Dangxiang costumes. We just tagged along and listened to the curator’s vivid stories about the Dangxiang ethnic group and the creation of the temple and the statute. It was both a worthy history lesion and an entertainment session for me.

A good place for people to see something about the history, culture, art, architecture and religion !!.
This temple has a Gigantic Reclining Buddha. Guide told us its thirty-five metres long, unfortunately its all covered with scalfolding as the restoration work in progress. From the side ,although not visible, one could still see that this statue is made of clay on a wooden frame. It does depicts the Gautama Buddha’s attainment of nirvana, with his ten disciples standing behind him. This hall has a wooden structure are murals of Journey to the West ,Mountain & Sea Classics. Our Guide told us many tales on the 18 Arhats seated along the walkway, a lot of stories to remember !!! Next is the Sutras Exhibition Hall has all literatures and documentation on Buddhism as well as the collections of all the Buddhas statues. The Earthen Tower stands tall in the near distance, however we didn’t have much time to explore further. But we managed to browse through the Tourist Service Centre . All in all, it is a good place for people to see something about the history, culture, art, architecture and religion !!.

Worth a visit if you are in Zhangye
The main attraction here is the Giant Buddha - the largest reclining Buddha in China - which is quite old and very well-maintained. When we visited, it was being restored, so it had scaffolding all over it. Photos are not allowed inside temples, so you have to go to see not only the Giant Buddha, but also all of the other sculptures and murals painted on the walls (including a captivating mural of the Monkey King.) There is also a lovely museum as part of the complex which has many sutras and objects on display. If you are in Zhangye anyway (such as for the National Geopark, a Silk Road tour, or for the Horse Hoof Temples), or if a visit to this important Buddha is valuable to you, it is worth a visit. I would not travel all the way to Zhangye to see this, but it was impressive while we were here.

This temple is in the middle of the city. There is a large reclining Buddha in the temple. Surrounding it are many Bodhisattvas and old paintings, which have not yet been restored until they are new. When you arrive in Zhangye, you should stop by for about 2 hours. This place was also a printing center for the Chinese Tripitaka hundreds of years ago. There are still sutras and a printing press kept for study.

Here’s Marco Polo’s review of this very temple, from around 800 years ago:

“The people are Idolaters, Saracens, and Christians, and the latter have three very fine churches in the city, whilst the Idolaters have many minsters and abbeys after their fashion. In these they have an enormous number of idols, both small and great, certain of the latter being a good ten paces in stature; some of them being of wood, others of clay, and others yet of stone. They are all highly polished, and then covered with gold. The great idols of which I speak lie at length. And round about them there are other figures of considerable size, as if adoring and paying homage before them.”

Amazing place, with the largest reclining buddah in China which is breath taking! A beautiful series of temples and rooms, set in a gorgeous park like area - with fir trees and plants. There was a peacefulness to the grounds, people and atmosphere which I haven't felt in other religious sites here. The architecture was wonderful, such intricate designs. This is a must visit on any trip to Zhangye!

The temple contains the biggest sleeping Buddha in China. Make sure you look up to see the other statues overlooking it. Unfortunately, you can’t take photos of it. Apple maps will take you to the wrong side, but if you walk around the block you’ll find the ticket centre and entrance. It costs 40rmb and they asked to see my passport. There are other buildings with artefacts. The stupa is quite impressive, you can also go inside.

In April this year while in Zhangye city in Gansu ,China I decided to visit the Giant Buddha Temple as I had been told of it's significance by Chinese and Western friends.
Located in the ancient city of Zhangye in South West Gansu province the Giant Buddha Temple dates from the Western Xia Dynasty, which was from 1038 to 1227AD.
The Temple itself was built in 1098,and is remarkably well preserved and well worth a visit. definitely a "must see" for anyone visitng Zhangye. The entrance fee of 41 CNY was worth every cent or mao in Chinese. The Temple features an amazing giant reclinng Buddha and ancient design.Indeed the great Italian explorer Marco Polo came to Zhangye and admired the Temple. Indeed Maro Polo liked Zhangye so much he stayed there one year and wrote about the city in his famous writngs. Don't just take my word for it,If Marco Polo liked the Temple it must be good! Don't miss the Giant Buddha Temple in Zhangye! Andrew

The huge Reclining Buddha was really unique, but for us, the wooden structures in the Theatre Area were the real highlight of our visit. This area is in the back left corner of the property and not to be missed. Unfortunately, most of these structures in China have caught fire since the timber is so dry.

This temple contains the largest reclining Buddha in China and is probably the most visited tourist spot in this smallish city. Unlike many old temples I have seen in China, the Dafo Temple has not been restored on the outside. The paintwork on the walls have mostly faded, leaving the whole temple looking brownish-clay. This is actually quite appealing and authentic and imparts a sense of timelessness.

The statue of a serene Buddha inside is however in much better shape with the paintwork mostly intact. There are also a good number of smaller statues of disciples and lesser deities, and the walls at the back have depictions of the well-known story from Journey to the West. Photography is not allowed inside the temple but since it is quite dark inside, flashes going on inside would have spoilt the tranquil atmosphere. The temple itself and the beautiful gateway arch are quite nice for photography though. Allocate half to one hour.

It amazed me not only because it is huge, the Buddha and the statues behind him are vivid, you can feel how peaceful in their hearts from their faces.

Originally built during the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227), this Giant Buddha is the largest statue of the Reclining Buddha in China.

Don’t miss the Shanxi Guild, which was technically not part of the original temple but has since been incorporated into the complex. The Shanxi Guild was founded in 1724 during the Qing Dynasty and still contains a well-preserved gate, theatre stage, audience tower, bell and drum tower, memorial archway, wing rooms, and hall. The guild was used by traveling merchants from Shanxi province to help them network with one another, as well as making them feel more at home in this far-flung city.

Fun to see the giant and famous reclining Buddha statue and to explore the temple grounds - it's a lovely, quiet oasis in Zhangye. Worth a visit.
