The Piazza Garibaldi was supposed to be a highlight of Sondrio, but our visit was quite disappointing. Drinking the worst cappuccino ever offered in Italy at one of the square's cafés we were looking at a place, covered with a fake lawn and ugly red plastic seats. The surrounding buildings, mostly from the 19th century, were quite attractive, but not really special: Teatro Sociale, Banca d'Italia, Grand Hotel de la Posta.
Around the fake lawn one can see that the 'Piazza' has cobblestones. The more than life size bronze statue of Garibaldi from 1909 stands on a high stone pedestal, really dominating the centre of the square.

Very large square beside the river Mallero surrounded by elegant palaces and dominate by the marble statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi , installed here in 1909 to replace the Monument to the Austrian Emperor Francis 1st

Spent 4 days in Sondrio staying at Piazzi House, which was in a perfect location. Absolutely loved wandering through the old town exploring all the winding paths(roads) and specialty shops. Tried all the cafes in Garibaldi Piaza, all great.

Sondrio is a very liveable town, with many places in which you can enjoy yourself; one of them is Piazza Garibaldi, surrounded by the main church and many palaces. It’s not that big, so it will make you feel at ease.

Nearly every town in Italy has a Piazza Garibaldi and Sondrio is no exception. A large square close to public parking, the old part of Sondrio, the Geological Museum and good bars to sit and watch people walk by.

This is a huge piazza dominated by the theater, the Hotel Della Posta and a number of banking establishments. Off season (July/August) when there are few activities in the piazza, it appears formal and lifeless; however; during much of the year there are events scheduled and the piazza comes alive.

Sondrio, is a great half-way stop to stretch your legs between Milan or Bergamo airports and Bormio.
Park underground in central Piazza Garibaldi, named after the statute of Giuseppe Garibaldi erected in the square in 1909. The north side of the square is bordered by the garden of Palazzo Martinengo, decorated with mosaics depicting figures from Valtellina's history and art. Take a look inside the Banca Popolare di Sondrio, with its imposing furnishings designed in 1960. Stroll up the narrow pedestrian alley Via Dante with its interesting shops all the way to Piazza Cavour. Double back and take Via Cavallotti to the Chiesa Collegiata opposite the well decorated municipal building.
You may then head back to Piazza Garibaldi along Corso Italia, but if you are a chocholate addict it is well worth continuing staright down Via XXV Aprile to the confectionery Emozioni di Cioccolatto
Recommend refreshments and people watching in one of the piazza cafes (if still early) or head for Trippi Restaurant (if time for lunch). Beware... you will be tempted to stay a few days to explore this charming city with its rich history, culinary tradition, world-renowned wines, and neighbouring attractions.

The nice but not extremely lively town square. Specious, beautiful and surrounded by cafés and hotels.

I will always remember my first visit to Sondrio in 1974 and many enjoyable afternoons in Piazza Garibaldi. This is a must place for me to spend time whenever I return to the area.

Small Italian town with small square with Garibaldi statue. Very nice buildings around the square and a mountain view. A southern laid back atmosphere. Two bars and an ice cream shop and boutiques around the corner.
