I was one of eight participants in a Kevin Pepper Photographic Workshop. Taskhyn joined the group in Ulgii, as a local guide, for three days while we were in Western Mongolia. We photographed eagles with their masters in a variety of settings, posing and in flight, horse shoeing, tug of war, making aaruul as well as other everyday life activity as it unfolded around us. Tashkyn's input was very much appreciated by the group facilitating these activities and explaining to us what was going on. He also accompanied us for a morning in the Ulgii market, serving as interpreter and guide. He has a good command of English, a pleasant, engaging manner, forthcoming with a wide range of local knowledge from livestock practices to religion.

We contact Tashkyn from Western Altai and he organized us a very nice 11 days trip in the Altai region. We shared the nomad family life and attended the Golden Eagle hunter festival in Olgii with an excellent team that included driver, amazing cooker and English speaking guide. Thanks to the team, we lived the perfect combination of cultural experience, trek, horse riding and we really experienced the legendary nomad hospitality.

We totally recommend Western Altay Tours as they were very attentive to our questions, well organised and provided us a very authentic experience.

In September of 2018 my husband and I took a 15-day private tour in western Mongolia with Western Altai Tours guided by the owner, Taskhyn Khalamkhan. He had planned an excellent customized itinerary for us which took us to the homes of several Eagle Hunters, camping in the Altai mountains, and to the Eagle Festival near Olgii. We were impressed with his intimate knowledge of the area, since he and his staff personally knew (or were related to!) almost everyone we met. Our driver, Ascar, was extremely good at his job, and constantly worked hard as the camp assistant, mechanic, cook’s helper, and overall go-to guy. We had a private cook, Makpal, the whole time also, who prepared three delicious hot meals daily, with a wide variety of recipes and ingredients. Taskhyn had requested our dietary preferences ahead of time, and we also had all the snacks and hot beverages we wanted.

The primary purpose of the trip was photography of the nomadic and eagle hunters’ way of life, along with the incredible Mongolian scenery. This tour gave us everything we dreamed of in the way of photographic opportunities, along with the ability to socialize with the locals and actually live their lifestyle by staying in their own yurts/gers and in their homes. We met champion eagle hunters, including Aisholpan Nurgaiv, and the oldest eagle hunter, and we were welcomed into all their homes with various yak tea ceremonies and cultural rites. Much of our driving followed the beautiful Khovd river valley, even up into the Altai Mountains.

The few nights we stayed in hotels, in Olgii and Khovd, Taskhyn booked us the best rooms with the best service, and for our rural nights (gers or tents) he and his staff made every accommodation to keep us comfortable and pampered. Taskhyn also arranged some unique experiences, such as a “private concert” by two local musicians, playing a Kazakh string instrument, the dombra, and a unique Russian accordion-style instrument called a garmon. He also showed us archaeological treasures few have seen, the balbal stones, ancient petroglyphs, stone circles, and eerie old cemeteries. We had a private photo shoot of five Kazakh eagle hunters, mounted on their beautiful horses, dressed in full regalia, in the warm late afternoon sun which we will never forget.

There were some long driving days, but the time seemed to fly as we gazed at the vistas of the steppe, at the yak and camel herds, and as Taskhyn educated us about the nomadic way of life and Mongolian history. He was very knowledgable and easy to talk to, and very accommodating of our “tourist” questions and concerns. We got thousands of wonderful photos, and immensely enjoyed the two-day Eagle Festival with photo ops of eagle performances, goat-pulling, camel-racing, and various other rodeo-type events.
Travel in western Mongolia lacks the niceties of luxury travel, but if you seek a unique and customized western Mongolian adventure, we highly recommend traveling with Western Altai Tours since they did such an excellent job for us, and were very dependable and helpful in every way.

We visited Altai Tavan Bogd National Park with Taskhyn for a trekking and camping trip in August and September 2019 and had an amazing time. Taskhyn is a great guide and he runs a well organised outfit. The park is beautiful and a must do if you’re heading to Mongolia. Would definitely recommend going with Western Altai Tours - you will likely also save quite a bit compared to booking with a UB based company.

Great guide Anwarbek, a local Kazakh man living in the park. Taskhyn was perfectly accommodating in tailoring the tour to my wishes and price range. I could not find a better price. He also helped me get a bus ticket from Russia to Olgii.

A friend and I wished to go skiing in Tavan Bogd. After contacting several outfitters, Tashkyn and Western Altai Tours proved to be by far the most accommodating, going the extra mile to provide us with the experience we wanted. It was the experience of a lifetime, I cannot recommend this tour company enough!

We have only amazing things to say about our experience with Taskhyn and Western Altai Tours. My wife and I visited Mongolia for our honeymoon in August 2018. We were eager to be in nature and with animals, but neither of us had any serious experience camping and hiking. We emailed Western Altai and five other companies who do treks in the Altai region to see if they could put together a low intensity and flexible horse trek for us. It was immediately clear that Taskhyn was the person to go with. For 2 months before we had even committed to using his services, we exchanged email after email ironing out the itinerary, discussing our preferences, asking logistical questions, and negotiating the price. No other company was even close in terms of pricing, flexibility, privacy, and quality, and many of them wanted us to pay deposits way in advance, risking us paying then not getting what was promised to us. Then on the actual trek, Taskhyn exceeded all expectations. He was incredibly kind and patient, making for a great tour guide. We learned so much from him and deeply enjoyed our conversations. He very clearly had a lot of experience and local knowledge, and was able to handle any logistical mishaps with ease. Everything went perfectly according to plan, which after actually visiting and then hearing the experiences of other groups, is very rare. In all, we couldn't have had a better honeymoon, and Taskhyn was the biggest reason why. If you're still not sure about visiting Mongolia, go! And if you're still not sure which tour company to go with, go with Taskhyn. We did a lot of research into the other companies, and from lack of flexibility to straight up fake online reviews and not delivering on their promises, Taskhyn is by far the best choice. Thank you again, Taskhyn!

Great tour with great clients. Actually not the clients brother and sister. It is a bold decision to have a honeymoon in Mongolia instead of having 5 star luxury hotels in Europe of somewhere else. Anyway we enjoyed the tour by giving our services to you! Thank you brother for your positive review. Please come again!

I am more than happy to recommend Taskhyn for your Olgii visit. I went to Mongolia, last year in January, 2017. It was a trip for my 30th birthday, and I spent 7 days in the Western Mongolia, and 7 days in the Gobi desert.

For the western part, Taskhyn was my tour guide. It did not take long for me to realise that has a thorough knowledge of the Mongolian history, the tribes and the People of Mongolia. His people skills are really good. He English is very good too, which specially is important because most of the Mongolians outside the capital, do not understand and speak English, so you'd need a good translator.

He was very careful about my food requests, as I am a vegetarian. He cooked personally for me every day just to make sure I won't have any surprises or regrets.

I personally felt Taskhyn is very passionate with helping travellers coming to Mongolia and showing them the real Mongolia, utterly beautiful and yet so wild in its truest form! Whenever I will go to Mongolia again in future, I definitely want Taskhyn to be my tour guide again.

My uncle and I visited Western Mongolia in June. Due to our total lack of preparation/absurd optimism we had no guide lined up or firm itnerary in place. Luckily we contacted Tashkyn and he was quick to organize an itineraryfor our relatively short trip. He managed to work in many of the highlights we came for (Eagle hunters, Altai mountains hiking/glacier, horseback riding and nomadic family visits) and helped us organize the flights. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Tashkyn always worked hard to give us an authentic experience and worked within our limits (my uncle being 72 years old). He is very friendly, accomodating and prepared. Just the kind of person you would want guiding a mutil-day trip. We came out of the trip feeling like we had the adventure of a lifetime and much better understanding of the culture of people living in this corner of Mongolia.
