The City of LIER is a real interesting small town in the Province of Antwerpen. Very worthwhile visiting. It has a nice historical city center with a small canal system.

I have visited Lier many times, and for me it is one of the most beautiful towns in Belgium. The charming historical houses, the river Nete that flows through the centre, the quiet beguinage and the Jubilee Clock of the Zimmertower give Lier it’s unique landscape. And if the weather is good, you can end your visit on one of the many café terraces on the pretty squares.

Lier is everything you look for in a Flemish town but than on a smaller scale. This makes it perfect to visit. Late Gothic building all around and great restaurants. Really a recommendation to visit. ..

Lovely gothic looking town, charming markets with old men selling birds and animals. A step back in time. A lot of little cafes selling good strong beer.

No idea why this one isn't on the tourist hit list. Lier is absolutely charming. A beautiful old town and a fun place to spend a day wandering the streets, sitting in a cafe, trying the local beer. Visit the Begijnhof, take a 45-minute (Dutch language) tour on the river in a converted eel-fishing boat. I've blogged details on Wanderwiles.

This is a great little city. Beautiful architecture, great bakeries and restaurants, and interesting museums. Definitely start at the Stadt Huis where you will find the tourist information office where they can point you in the direction of the UNESCO heritage sights and interesting museums and walks around the city. Near the cathedral we found a great cafe called "Kaffei & meer" that does not look like much from the outside but was incredible! They have a part of the original Zimmer Turm clock and the couple running it are incredibly generous and took good care of us making it surprisingly good value for money anywhere, not just Belgium.

Lier has a gorgous inner town around the Nete river. Nice atmosphere, good places to shop and drink/eat.

This is a lovely small town, once important enough to host the marriage ceremony between Joanna of Castile and Philip the handsome and a bit later host the banned Christian II of Denmark for several years. The Grote Markt is a lovely square with the belfry as well as the classicist town hall, and lots of restaurants housed in nice buildings. Across the river is the main church, named after a local saint who died in 719. Not to be missed is the beguinage, a little town inside the town. After a walk through the center, seeing the Zimmer tower and gevangenpoort, one can walk on top of where once was the city wall, now lined with trees, to the grote spui. The latter regulated water levels on the river through town, from 1516 onwards. The Weyts museum (stedelijk museum) has a small but nice collection.

A lovely city with plenty of great architecture, a choice of restaurants and bars and a very interesting clock tower/museum which was well worth visiting for anyone interested in mechanical and astronomical clocks.
