The centerpiece of the tomb is Ferdowsi’s sarcophagus, which is surrounded by a serene and reverent ambiance. Visitors often pause here to pay their respects, acknowledging the immense impact Ferdowsi has had on Persian identity and the preservation of the Persian language during a time of cultural transition. The tomb is not just a resting place for Ferdowsi but a symbol of the enduring power of literature to shape and sustain a nation’s cultural heritage.
The gardens surrounding the tomb add to the experience, providing a tranquil setting where visitors can stroll, meditate, or simply enjoy the natural beauty. The site also features a museum that offers further insights into Ferdowsi’s life, the creation of the "Shahnameh," and its lasting influence on Persian culture. The museum exhibits include manuscripts, artworks, and artifacts related to the epic and its historical context.
Visiting Ferdowsi’s Tomb is a deeply moving experience, especially for those who appreciate literature, history, and cultural heritage. The tomb stands as a testament to the power of words and the importance of preserving a nation’s language and identity. Whether you are familiar with the "Shahnameh" or new to Ferdowsi’s work, the tomb provides an inspiring and educational experience that resonates with the timeless themes of heroism, justice, and the human spirit.

We had a guide with us that made it easier to appreciate this site. The poet Ferdosi's memorial is at Tus, a short drive from Mashhad. I am interested in Persian poetry so was keen to see the very attractive setting and the locals having a day out there. There were also the remaining ancient mud brick walls of Tus there which satisfied my archaeological interests. Hakim Ferdosi was born near Tus in the village of Paz in 940 AD. His family were feudal lords. He was supported by the Samanid dynasty but when the Qaznavids invaded in 994 AD the Sultan Mahmood cast him aside and he wandered in poverty and grief until his death. He was buried at Tus in 1025. I am advised that a book of his enigmatic poetry (Shahnama – 60,000 verses) can be found in nearly every home in Iran. It took him 30 years to write. It tells the story in myth and legend of Iran and eschewed Arabic for Farsi. The tomb was modeled after Cyrus’ tomb and was completed in 1968. There was an interesting museum nearby with some ancient, illuminated manuscripts inside.
Out the back of the tomb were the mud brick walls and remains of the ancient town of Tus, which after being ravaged by the Mongols in 1220 AD and then Miranshah , the son of Tamerlane in 1390, it was gradually forgotten. These ramparts were originally 12 metres high, 7 kilometres long and had a width of 6 metres. This was a very pleasant and fascinating place to visit.

Ferdowsi was one of the most important and respectful poets of Iran. His Moseleum is located in the city of Tus which is about 35Km far from Mashhad. It is easy to get There, most of the hotels in Mashhad offer several dailies guided tours to Tus, Also you can take a taxi or van. We were 6 friends and took a private van so paid 100,000 Tomans for 4 hours. The garden is a big one and belonged to his own. The garden consists of a small museum (including ancient things about the history of the city and some painting of Ferdowsi's well-known book -Shahnameh- story. Also the tomb of Mahdi Akhavan Sales another contemporary Iranian poet is next to the museum. If you are interested in handicrafts there is a great gallery and shop in the garden. You can find different kinds of dishes that have craved of a special kind of black stone.
