Bukit Lawang Trekking offer bespoke private camping and wildlife spotting tours in the Sumatran jungle. Working with certified local guides, we can accompany you on tours of between 1-6 days – all starting from the small riverside town of Bukit Lawang. We have personally pioneered all of our routes and camping locations to take you away from the crowds and maximise your chances of seeing the unique wildlife that the Leuser Ecosystem has to offer, from wild orangutans to the Sumatran Elephant. Our team can do their best to keep the jungle clean and the wildlife safe!, We know how to behave in the jungle and love to protect the natural assets and animal kingdoms as well as select suitable trekking to see the creatures. We are a group of 4 friends who spent 3 extraordinary days and 2 nights with Ucok and his team in the Sumatran jungle. A couple from Spain joined us for the first 2 days of the trek before leaving with Ucok, while we stayed for an additional night with Robby and Risky, the apprentice guides.
Everything went perfectly. At first, we were a bit apprehensive when we saw our first orangutans because there were a lot of other tourists. Fortunately, most of them were only doing the 3-hour trek. Once we ventured deeper into the jungle, we were lucky enough to see a mother orangutan and her baby just 3 or 4 meters away from us! In total, over the three days, we spotted about a dozen orangutans and 5 or 6 other species of monkeys!
Ucok was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English, which allowed us to learn a lot about the jungle and share many laughs together! Robby and Risky were amazing! We shared good moments of laughter despite some communication challenges. The chef also treated us to what were probably the best meals of our entire stay in Sumatra.
The camps were quite rustic, but we had great evenings and slept well. On the third day, we wished we could walk more in the jungle, but we didn’t get the chance, so we relaxed at the camp until 11 a.m. After that, we left on inner tubes to head back to Bukit Lawang and spent one last memorable evening with our guides, with whom we got along really well.
We recommend everyone to try at least 2 days and one night in the jungle with this organization! It was an unforgettable experience.

What an incredible experience. Ucok and Robbie are both absolutely fantastic and made sure we saw lots of orangutans during our short trek. Ucok always seemed to know where to be, wait patiently and let the orangutan come to you.
Extremely knowledgeable guides who clearly have a great passion for the work they do.
The lunch provided was also very tasty. We are already hoping to return for a longer trek with Ucok.

Our experience with the Bukit Lawang Trekking was nothing short of spectacular. From the very beginning, we were warmly welcomed by Robbi (Fruitman), Karan, and Ucok (our guides), and Ocop (the cooker).
On the first day, we were incredibly fortunate to see five orangutans, including a mother with her baby. It was a magical and humbling experience to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
Our guides were very knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the different types of trees and plants in the jungle. We also got to taste some delicious local fruits, which added to the richness of the experience. It was clear to see their deep love for nature in the way they spoke about the jungle and its inhabitants.
Robbi carried many kilos on his back to transport all the fruit. He is a man of great strength, and his effort allowed us to enjoy fresh fruits throughout the journey.
At night, we laughed a lot with Karan. His games, stories, and magic tricks were delightful and added a special touch to the evenings at the camp.
The entire journey through the jungle was breathtakingly beautiful. The lush greenery and the sounds of nature made us feel completely immersed in the wilderness.
On the last day, monkeys approached our campsite, making for an absolutely spectacular and unforgettable end to our adventure.
We are immensely grateful to Robbi, Karan, Ucok, and Ocop for their hospitality, expertise, and for making this trip an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking to explore the wonders of Bukit Lawang!

Pak Ucak and his team lead our family on a full day jungle trek. We really enjoyed our trek, and Pak Ucak and his team showed us many things, and we had opportunity to see good variety of wildlife including orangutan, gibbons, Thomas monkeys, hornbill, and more. They also provided a delicious fruit snack and lunch during our trek. For the end of the trek, we took jungle inner tube taxis on the river back to Bukit Lawang. Our family really enjoyed this special day together.

We had the most fantastic day jungle trekking and witnessing a total of 13 magnificent orangutans in the wild!
Robby and Ucok were brilliant navigators and were incredibly helpful at allowing us to have closer encounters with a feeding mother and her baby, as well as a feeding male 🥹
The lunch provided was traditional and very tasty, setting us up for the remainder of the trek ahead.
We were also happy to learn about how the educational awareness regarding the orangutan’s importance to the ecosytem is increasing, as well as how the efforts to conserve are improving 🧡

The tour was amazing! The guides had everything taken care of from the transport to amazing food and spotting the animals. I very recommend the raft at the end of your trip, it was spectacular to see the forest from the river and very fun to sail the waves.

We doubted whether we would see orangutans or even other species as we had only booked the day. Thanks to Ucok’s expertise and sense of observation we were delighted to see the orangutans above our heads evolve. Ucok reassured us a lot because the jungle was for us synonymous with a risky odyssey and it is without guide. So we benefited greatly from this day. Ucok perfectly understood our desires: to get away from the crowd and spare our efforts because my physical condition was not too much. I highly recommend booking with Ucok. It was thanks to him that our experience was unforgettable.

The whole trek was amazing. Everything was taken care of & the food and guide were on point. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting bukit lawang and wants a conscious trekking in the jungle with the best qualified guides!!

We booked for three days and two nights in the jungle and it turned out as the most magical experience of our lives.
Ucok was our guide, accompanied by Karan and they took amazing care of us. Their knowledge of the forest is fascinating and they even taught us a couple of things about medicinal plants. We saw a lot of wildlife (orang utan, gibbons, native monkeys, turtles, beautiful butterflies, and more) which was truly amazing to witness.
We laughed, shared stories and delicious food together (Yudi was the most fabulous cook of the jungle).
Ucok, Karan and the jungle are the most incredible guides, and this experience is medicine for the soul and body. Now that we look back at it we realise that 3 days was even too short and we want to come back.
