We had a really great experience with this company. We did the 2 night/3 day trek and loved it. We saw orangutans, thomas langur monkeys, tortoises and turtles, briefly saw some gibbons, it was great. The team do an amazing job of cooking great meals, they are really skilled. It was wonderful, arriving in to camp after a day of walking and jumping straight in to a beautiful river in the middle of the jungle - what an experience. The beds in camp are fine, it's a thin mattress with a blanket so make sure you bring something to act as a pillow. We also used a sarong to cover the mattress as it's got a plastic cover which you stick to a bit. The team are super friendly and knowledgable. We definitely recommend!

First of all, the booking process was really smooth. Well done, Marie! We really enjoyed our time with the Sumatra Orangutan Explore team in Bukit Lawang. The one day trekking was nice. We spotted several orangutans, including Mina—everybody runs! 🎶🎶 (don’t worry you’ll get it once you come to Bukit Lawang 😉). During the jungle trek, our guides Nanda and Rizal were taking care of us, especially me due to the leech attacks. Our short visit to the Bat Cave was also nice! We explored the cave with a guide for approximately one hour. The cave is worth a visit. Thanks Iman and the team! Hope to see you again in the future.

We did the 3 night/4 day trek, it was incredible! Amazing wildlife (not just orangutans!) knowledgeable guides & tasty food (super flexible with my vegan diet haha) Iman & the team are truly kind people, with the jungle and wildlife in the forefront of everything the company & guest house is becoming! I would recommend bringing long pants, breathable clothing that drys quickly as everything stays wet in the jungle, long socks (leaches) & good trainers. Also bring your own water bottle! They have a refill station at restaurant. The only thing I would change is too extend the trek by a night because I wasn’t ready to leave the jungle!

The 1 day trek was absolutely amazing! Our guides were Dani and Raja and they were the best!! They were incredibly knowledgeable about everything in the jungle and were constantly pointing things out to show us. Thanks to their expertise we were able to see many orangutans, more than I could count! They were very respectful of the jungle and all the wildlife - truly an ethical trek. We always maintained a safe distance from the orangutans and the guides were there to protect us when the playful young ones got too close. The trek was about 6-7 hours, we had nasi goreng for lunch and fruit for snacks, and it ended with a fun and refreshing swim and tub ride down the river. The team at Sumatra Orangutan Explore are the friendliest group of people I have ever met, they treat you like family right away and you feel like you are at home. The food was really good, nice mix of local Indonesian food and French food. The location is really nice looking over the river while you eat. The rooms are nice and comfy. I would absolutely recommend Sumatra Orangutan Explore to anyone visiting Sumatra! The trek was a life changing experience for me and a must-do when visiting Indonesia; they have other tours as well as trekking so you can stay for a while and have lots of fun things to do. Bukit Lawang is a really cool village to explore. Thank you for the great memories!!
