Emei mountain is 1 of the 4 sacred buddhist mountains of china and a UNESCO site. And this Jinding is right at the summit
It’s 2.5 hrs by car from chengdu city to the foot of the emei mountain. Then you take a 1.5 hr bus further up to about 2,000m. After that a 45 min hike up to 2,500m. And lastly a short cable car ride to 3,000m where the temple and buddha statue are
And of course you can hike up all the way over 3 days
Today was non peak season and a work day and already fairly crowded. I suggest you avoid weekends and public holidays
Not that chilly even at the top. I was sweating wearing a light jumper
It was foggy so the views were not great as expected

I think this refers to the top, flat part on the top of the mountain, where the giant golden statue of Samantabhadra stands. This place is majestic and breathtaking! Once you are there, you feel all the efforts for getting to Emei and to the top of the mountain are well worth it.
The place is large, probably takes a couple of hours to explore. There is the giant statue of Samantabhadra (seems to me at least 100 ft tall), a temple, a place for the monks, and a gift shop. On the back of the temple is the steep cliff that falls several thousand feet straight. Most people get there in the morning hoping to see sunrise. The viewing platform gets crowded in the morning. In my opinion, the best time to go there is late afternoon, when most tourists are gone, and the whole place is yours to enjoy. It is quiet, you can even hear the whisper of the wind. The cloud flies by you, making you wonder if you are in heaven. Over the distance you can see the "Ten Thousand Buddha Temple" glowing under the light. There used to be a mini train service to Ten Thousand Buddha Temple but the service was discontinued in 2008. Now you can only go there by foot through a different path.
The place is known for having a lot of rain and fog. To better your chance, I highly recommend you stay at one of the two hotels at the summit. When I visited the place, we had descent weather in the afternoon we arrived (although it was pouring on the way up to the mountain), but the fog was so thick in the second morning and we could not see anything. Do not expect much from the hotel (they are all expensive and bad), just treat it a place for one night resting.
To get there you have two options:
1) Hike for two days from Baoguo Temple (the base of the mountain).
2) Take a bus from Baoguo Temple to Leidongping. Walk about 1km from Leidongping to the foot of the cable car. From there you can take the cable car straight up (which takes 5 minutes), or walk up for about 2 hours. I chose walking. There are a lot of stairs, so be prepared. There are people selling you water along the path, but the restrooms are filthy! I recommend walking because it gives you a lot of viewing stops along the way.
At Baoguo Temple there are people trying to get into their private cars talking you up to the mountain. I highly recommend using the shuttle provided by the park service. The road to the top is windy. If you get into an accident with a private car then you are stuck! The shuttle bus will make a stop at a gift shop. You do not need to buy anything that is weather related from the gift shop. The weather can be drastically different at the bottom, mid, and top of the mountain. On the day of our visit, it was hot and sunny at the base, pouring in the middle, and partly cloudy at the top.
Another advice: the top of the mountain is COLD!!! But the hotels at the top have parka for rent. You do not need to rent them at Leidongping and bring them all the way up.
Fees:
1) Park entrance is 150RMB, 50% discount for students with ID.
2) Cable car the Leidongping is 60RMB up, 55RMB down.
3) Shuttle bus 90RMB round trip
4) Expect to pay 400 to 800RMB for a room at the top.
5) Parka is 30RMB for one night.

I did the full mountain up to the Golden Summit in winter. If you are doing just a day trip, that’s all the time you can spare if you’re aiming for the Golden Summit.
The journey up
Take a 2 hour bus ride from the BaoGuoSi bus terminal to LeiDongPing. On the bus, I was lucky to meet a group of 8 friendly locals who visit the Golden Summit every year to pray. Upon arriving at Lei Dong Ping, the group of locals guided me to the right side where there is a no entry sign with a small barricade, but many locals still walk that path up. That path is wide enough for vehicles to ply through (in fact, some vehicles do so). You will end up walking the windy road that vehicles take to get to the cable car station.
Why am I elaborating about this? There are 2 benefits. First, the path is less slippery – many, including me, did not use crampons or walking sticks to walk. Second, there is scenery along the way (at least in winter) – all the trees have snow and the scene (if coupled with some sunlight) is gorgeous. See my attached photo.
The Summit
After walking (plus photo taking) for about 45mins, we arrived at the cable car station. Buy your tickets and head up to the summit. I was very blessed as there was sunlight, and it was clear blue skies. The view of the golden PuXian Bodhisattva statue against the clear blue sky is stunning. You will see many pilgrims (and locals) making offerings and praying at the temple just behind the huge statue.
For a great view on a clear day, walk behind the statue and follow the path to the right – you will enjoy views of the Ten-Thousand Buddhas Peak with a sea of clouds if you are lucky! Walk all the way to the end and you’ll see some religious flags which are very colourful and make a good photo opportunity. See my attached photos.
Is it worth it?
It really depends on the weather. Be meticulous – the weather at the bottom of the mountain and at the top can be very different. When I set off, it was very cloudy (no sun at all) at the foot. However, the forecast had predicted that it would be clear at the top, so I decided to try my luck. I was very glad I did it. So, pay attention to the weather forecast – look out for the mountain top forecast if you are aiming for the Golden Summit. That said, like a previous reviewer mentioned: be prepared to see nothing at all.

The very reason why I wanted to come to E-Meishan is to savour for myself the wonders and splendour of the Natural World. It's been said that people used to throw themselves down the cliff to justify their purity towards Buddhism. And so, with a head full of notion about the peak of E-meishan, I came up here, imagining of its mythic quality. Alas, I am let down immensely as the path leading to the peak nowadays is filled with shops, opportunists that are there to stomp on you if you are not careful enough. So much about seeking for enlightenment, eh? Anyhow, as I was sitting up there on the peak, I was asking myself what does this place try to convey, ie. being a natural wonders of the world or as a sacred place for the devoted Buddhists to visit? Somehow, commercialism is everywhere. Chinese tourists are everywhere with their smartphones blaring with cheesy techno Chinese pop songs, spitting, shouting to be heard when they could simply have a civilised conversation. So much for a place that's meant to be for reflection and contemplation. Rather, I only saw the worst of humanity, of us being mean to the monkeys that reside there. Once upon a time, it's been said that monkeys were mean to the tourists & travellers. Upon seeing how they were treated by Chinese tourists, throwing food on the monkeys' faces just to provoke them, throwing rocks at them, I simply left not comprehending why we are cruel for cruel's sake. Sigh~Emeishan is better off living as a legend in my mind because reality hurts.

Went to emeishan on 11/9/2013. Took a mini bus that cost 90rmb (allows 3 rides in a day) at 7am and only managed to reach the golden summit by 1030am. The bus can be board from the bao Guo shi bus interchange. Buses leave when full. Tip: sit on the right side of the bus which is individual seats as the buses will zoom their way up and are pretty zig zaggy, hence the individual seats are better and u won't have to worry about falling off your seat).
The bus will drive for an hour before asking everyone to purchase their entrance ticket to the mt. Which cost 185rmb. Kinda steep, but hey! It's unesco! After purchasing your ticket, walk thru the gate n board onto the same bus waiting at the other side if the entrance. Out of graciousness, do return to the same seat. Then it's another hr drive up all the way to leidongping. From here, walk up the stairs beside the tourist information. The walk to the cable car took us almost half an hr as it was crowded n slippery after the morning rain (thanks to teddy bear hotel that provides free bamboo walking stick for that extra support). The cable car cost 120rmb for a return. Don't safe that $ for a one way as lots of time are wasted on walking. Cable car queue was a challenge. You really have to rush n prevent people from cutting into u (well, that's not a surprise for china as it is their culture to rush n cut queues or u will loose out). The cable car ride up took around less that 6-8mins. Once up there, climb another 5 mins to the summit, depending on the weather n crowds n season. Once u have reach the golden summit (3005m above sea level), you will be awe by the golden Buddha statue on elephants! Explore a bit before going up the building directly behind the statue where u get a very good view of wang fo ting(万佛顶) from a distance with clouds below it. Jus like a Chinese painting! Amazing..
Warning, temp fell to 7 degree when I was up there. Depending on your luck if u wanna catch the legendary Buddha halo n the sea clouds. It was so misty when I was there. Jus wait a while for the clouds to pass for better picture.
Tip: heard that some will stay at the 2 hotels up at the summit. Really, it's very run down looking n may not have what ever they claims for they claimed to be 3 stars. After the golden summit, go back to the same direction n take the cable car down n catch the mini bus to wan nian shi (万年诗) or back to bao Guo shi. Bus leaves when full.

E'meishan Jinding is the most memorable part of my chengdu trip. You do not need to be buddhist to be blown away by it's beauty. The buddha statue and temple at the peak jinding was surrounded by fog and mist making it look like a paradise on earth. It is as if you have gone up to the heaven to pay respect to the buddha and deity. When i reached there all i said was woah woah woah. The beauty took my breath away. If you are an early bird or if you stay at the local hotel on ermeishan you should wake up early and catch the sun rise up among the clouds which is according to the guide a magnificent natural scene which you will not forget . For those lucky ones you may vaguely see the buddha halo crown formed by early sunrise rays among the clouds.
We took the bus up to the cable stop (1.5 hours for bus ride and 2 mins for cable ride) after which is followed by the hike up many steps to jingding (one hour for us as we have to acclimatize). Along the way there were many monkeys who like to snatch tourist's food, drinks and even cameras . So do not feed them as they may scratch you and keep your belongings away from them because they will love to snatch cameras and handphones as souvenirs. if you want to take pictures of them , step 1-2 meters away as safeguard.
Upon reaching jinding you will see the magnificent four faced buddha surrounded by clouds and neighboring mountain giving you a very peaceful sensation. Although it is a very touristy place , the monks here are very quiet and they do not push you to buy things unlike shaolin temple. In fact the monks here will do simple chanting or ring a bell when you bow and pray. The incense here is more expensive hence some people will buy their own incense at the foot of mountain before the bus ride.
We were lucky to have a peep at the highest peak of er mei shan which has a pavilion up there. Usually its is occluded by clouds but we were lucky to have a peep of it when the wind blew away the clouds for a while.
After jingding you can descend by bus to wan nian temple which is the mid point. You hould take the cable car ride up and down as it saves more time. Here there are more tourists because not many people have time to go all the way to jingding and not many people can climb so high. IF you can' climb there are people who can carry you up via sedan , not sure of the price though.
E'merishan is indeed a place i will remember . An heaven on earth which makes you feel peaceful and stress free. Must go!!!

I hiked up Emeishan from Baguo in 9.5 hours, via Wannian Temple. I started at 6:30 from the Tricky Monkey Hotel ($130 RMB single room, clean, hot showers, friendly, recommended) and followed a map I had downloaded. Most maps are works of art and do not show distances, elevation, difficulty, etc. I stayed overnight at the excellent hotel at the summit ($480 RMB) and descended (after walking around at sunrise) via Magic Peak Monastery to Wuxiangang Bus Station, where I took a bus back to Baguo. Most of the time it was very misty, so visibility was limited to 20-500 m. Food and drink were available (inexpensive) on the trail, which consists of stone steps in a wide path. It was not touristy for most of the way, except when you hit the bus station and cable car near the top, for those who take the easy way up. I was attacked by a monkey- they are big and aggressive (after being teased so many times) - so take a stick. I took a back-pack with warm clothes since the average temperature at the top is 3 degC -it was worth it. I find most of the other reviews misleading and written by people who don't know how to plan their trip. The bus from Chongqing took 6 h to go, and 7.5 h return. It goes to Emei Town bus station. From there, take a taxi $20-$30 RMB to Baoguo. Actually, the first part of the hike (about 15 km) from Baoguo to Qingyin Pavilion was not interesting, so you might instead start from there and cut the time down a bit.

I was in Chengdu on 12 May 2013 and signed up for a domestic tour package covering Emei Shan and LeShan Big Buddha. The ground package sourced via internet cost our peers at only RMB450 per person. It was a tour package on a Two Days One night package on coach with accommodation, meals and entrance fees packaged in.
The coach was nice, decent and comfortable; our package was indeed cheaper than those purchased by the local. Four of us ( from Malaysia) blend in well with the local as we are bi-lingual and able to communicate with the local. Our package even have a free show of acrobatic and the famous Si-Chuan masks changing show. SImply amazing on the speed that the performers managed to change their masks.
We enjoy our tour very much but there is a setback as the tour package does not include the cable car ride, Three times for a cost of RMB 195 per pax. Very highly priced.
We have a tough walk of 4.5 km despite thrice cable car ride.
Emei Shan is a tough itinerary not for the faint hearted and those physically not as fit.

We began the visit badly following a night in one of the worst, dirtiest hotels we have ever had the misfortune to stay in. The drive up the mountain to the park entrance and then to the cable-car station is up a typical tortuous but beautiful mountain road. You begin paying cash out again to get the car into the park then later there is a police check-point manned by distinctly unwelcoming, unsmiling officials where everyone other than the driver has to get out and proceed through a turnstile arrangement before being allowed to get back into your car. Fortunately there was not much traffic and this did not take long. We then got to the "real" entrance, parked the car and began the climb through the usual barage of Chinese Tourist Shops in pouring rain. There are quite a few monkeys to be seen on the way up, they are pretty well behaved and can be very amusing! Despite having taken medicine for hiking at altitude my wife still became quite ill and only just made it to the bottom cable-car station, it really is a good strong walk uphill. The cable cars each hold 101 people at a time and so although the lines were very long we only had to wait in line for about 15 minutes to board but it is a crush with everyone wanting a window view and the Chinese are not known for their patience and good manners in this sort of situation. Think of a 101 person rugby scrum without a referee and you will not be far from the mark. Once at the top station it is a relatively short walk up to the steps leading up to the temples. You can buy insense sticks at a booth here and pray on the way up.
It is a tradition here to take a padlock up with you and fasten it onto the railings - you and the love of your life then throw all of the keys off into the void to signal that you will remain together always - really nice idea!
Pay to get back into the cable car and then walk bak down again! There are "Sherpas" who will carry you up and down if necessary - my wife took advantage!
Again a beautiful place spoilt only by Chinese tourists spitting everywhere, throwing litter and smoking despite notices to the contrary............

After the 2 hour bus ride from base of the mountain, we arrived at LeidongPing. Drizzling. Fog all around. Fog only. No scenery.
The steps were so icy tourists were falling like bowling pins. Everyone had to buy the anti-slip socks from peddlars at 20 Yuan/pair. Strange that it was only icy near the bus terminal and not higher up. I have to suspect those peddlars sprayed water onto the stairs.
Miraculously, the cable ride climbed above the fog, and suddenly, blue sky and sunny.
There was only one scenery to look at. From one summit jutting above the clouds, we viewed a the other summit jutting out from the clouds. It was quite impressive. But how long can one marvel at one scene, no matter how impressive it is?
There were temples and statues but we were not into religions or architecture.
For the scenery I would have given it a 4. But the 2-hour (4-hour return) bus rides was simply torturous.
See my youtube video "watch?v=5bR_kkfF_DM" to decide for yourself whether this trip is for you.
TIP: Be mentally prepared to see NOTHING. It can be foggy at the peak.

Altitude about 3000 over meter. Stop by when you tire then will be ok. I do not have any issue on it.
