Huge compound of Mao Zedong's birthplace in Shaoshan, comprising a large and beautiful garden, Bronze Statue of Mao Zedong, and his childhood residence.

Visited here in March 2024 and it's crowded with mainly domestic Chinese tourists.

All the time I have been visiting and now set up a second home in Changsha I have wanted to visit Shaoshan and especially The late Chairman Mao's memorial gardens and home.
My son in law and daughter had prepared the trip .
The journey was uneventful not a great deal to see on the way as such but pleasant and it took us appx 1.5 hours.
When we approached the actual area where the gardens, museum and house were naturally it was very busy. Still we managed to park the car and walked a little with the others day trippers.
The actual museum was excellent. I am calling it a museum but I suppose really it is a place of interesting artifacts that Chairman Mao had used and owned over the period he reigned . This was really interesting as it showed the years of wealth and success of him and the family.
Time to move on to see the house. Well the line up was incredible so we gave it a miss and walked round the gardens which were pleasant. when we got back to where we started the line up. This took us 45 minutes was even longer because the house of the family is so very very small.
A little disappointed so we decided not to visit the house. we went to search for a restuarant.
The one we found was up on a small hill looked liked a huge family house but when we got inside it was a well portioned restaurant with lovely views of the countryside . here the soil is a rich red colour so take care it gets everywhere.

Our car was washed by the owner's son and we had the chance to visit the vegetable garden to choose veggies we wanted to eat and to select the live fish and live chicken we wanted to eat . This was what my son inlaw expected and wanted.

I forgot to collect a business card for future!

there have a selcting of gifts one can buy, a little exopensive but nice.

An excellent meal with nice cold beers and a delicious dessrt.

For four people the cost was 150rmb (appx $23AUD). Very reasonable but beer was expensive 4rmb. More than what I pay in Kai Fu

A pleasant drive back to Changsha and getting back around 630pm it was time for dinner so we went to one of our favourite local restaurants where I have our apartment in Kai Fu and enjoyed as very cheap and wholesome meal.

We were all a little disappointed with the delays and missing out on the small house but as i know from experience it is not the ony place with long line ups.
it did not spoil the day and the weather was beautiful as usual.

I do strongly advise anyone visiting Shaoshan to see the memorial gardens and home of Chairman Mao plus the Museum to book online in advance or if you like, to go by tour operator.

I did notice a few wheelchairs but could not see any access fort them and there is some paved areas not even and the gounds in one are was a little muddy.

If you still want to go on your own be prepared!

On a scale of 10 I rate the trip overall 7. The restuarant made up for the litle disappointment.

Mao Zedong (1893-1973) became venerated as the leader of New China. Mao was a founder and leader of the People's Republic of China. In October 1949, Mao became famous as leader of the Chinese Communist Party. He became Chairman of the CCP and was well-known as a strategist, politician and political theorist. He attended the Hunan First Normal University. We observed Mao's remains in Beijing; he was succeeded by Jing Ching, his wife and partner. Mao spoke fluent Mandarin Chinese with a heavy Hunanese accent.
