Kanina Castle is located above the Village of Kanina. The castle was built in the 3rd century BC and in the 4th century AD it was turned into a fortress town. The castle rises on the side of Shushica Mountain 380 meters/1250 ft. and covers 4,000 acres. It initially would have been a military post for the Roman Empire. In the 6th century AD, the castle was used to strengthen the defenses of the Balkan Region. The height of the castle gives amazing daytime and night vies of the sea, Vlora, Sazan Island, the peninsula, and sunsets.

The remains of walls, a tower, and a paved road are reminiscent of a once powerful fortress, from where wonderful views open.
Although the entrance is paid (300 lek or 3 € per person), finding a ticket holder turned out to be a problem.
Another problem was the road from the cafe near the mosque to the fortress itself. Very slippery stones.
But the walk from the fortress to Vlora brought more impressions (an hour of descent along a winding road with mountains of garbage along the side of the road).

Departed in jogging mode from the apartment where I was staying at the other end of Vlora, a few kilometers swallowed but it remained a personal choice to do it on foot. Just be careful with Google maps as it indicated 6 kms instead of the 12 reeles as well as take drinks to hydrate as no protection from the sun. Doing it on foot allowed me to enjoy the breathtaking views as well as enjoy the views of the olive fields and shepherds. For history buffs I think everything complements even if there are still the walls of this fortress.

Worth the scary drive (last section not tarmac and very twisty) for the view alone. When we visited it was practically deserted and we didn't even have to pay for a ticket. The castle grounds are quite large and there are a few, well translated boards with info, otherwise you have uninterrupted views of the surrounding area. Very impressive.

On a rainy day we decided we needed to see out some cultural sites. So thanks to trip advisor we saw that this was a nice thing to see. Amazing views of the coast from up there. The castle ruins are substantially large with plenty of walking around for different angles.
The sad part is the constant trash or burn piles around the whole mountain. The road is a bit bumpy and narrow especially after a rain. There are restaurants and small stores on top.
I think it was well worth the trip.

The castle itself is said to be build in the 3rd century, reconstructed in the 5th. Now it looks like some ancient ruins, you can hardly tell there's a castle there. However, the view over the city of Vlora is very good, the best you can get. It's especially nice during the sunset. The road that leads to the castle is narrow, at some places, not more than one car can pass at a time, so drive slowly :) You can park for free where you find enough space.

If you want to go there and see all Valona Bay, it can be good..but if you go there without reading the History of Valona Principate you loose the best part of this rude Castell and don't understand the meaning of it.

Wonderful history here. We visited with our two young daughters. Nobody else was there so you can explore at your leisure. We saw sheep and horses. We picked olives, oregano, mint, grapes and figs. The view is amazing 360 degrees. Unreal to make a place built in the 3rd century BC your playground for a few hours!

The Kanine Castle is pretty much off the beaten track, and you'll need a car to reach it as it's high in the hills above Vlore.
Moreover, the castle is not in a representative shape and you can see many better all over Albania.
That's why I suggest coming primary for gorgeous views of Vlore bay from here. It's not a must, only if you have extra time.

I'd love to visit but won't have my own transport. Are there public buses or tourist buses from Vlore?
