A very nice place to visit. It is the back waters and a boat ride is required from kumarakom . House boats or Sikkari boats, depending on the budget and number of persons, can be hired for the trip. We went with 3 families ( 3 couples and 5 children) and hired a Sikkari boat for 3 hrs. The rates... More

Even after being a native of Kerala, never visited the place before as all the previous attempts were having bird watching in mind and I too was too much dependent on the reviews!! Finally without any expectations and an open mind decided to visit the place myself and see first hand what it look like. Went there yesterday morning, though... More

We had a walk. We could not locate any birds. It will be worth going around on a house boat and we can have better view and opportunity to sight birds.

This is a lovely location but it is not worth doing unless you get up early. Far too many young couples mucking around ruined the silence needed for any bird sighting later in the day. A fairly long walk into the tracks takes you alongside the waterway where a strategically placed boatman tries to entice tourists to take his trips!

The Bird Sanctuary was next to our Hotel and we were advised to go early, before 7am to ensure you see the best it can offer. 150 Rupees each and a guide for 300 Rupees. We decided against the guide. A fairly pleasant walk, uneven walking, very natural. We did see a couple of Egrets, Comorant, a squirrel like animal... More

We were told we should go at dawn to maximize the bird spooting opportunities but had had too many early mornings so went mid morning instead; We did see a pair of beautiful purple herons but the young indian couples who were enjoying the peace of this sanctuary were just as interesting and attractive

My trip to Kumarakom didn't get off to the best start, my driver turned up 2 hours late, so I arrived at the sanctuary at 11.00am not the best time for birding. The sanctuary is well organised and I paid my 150 rupee and set off on the path that is 2km . I noticed signs that warned of taking... More

This is an erstwhile plantation acquired by KTDC long time back and converted to a bird sanctuary. Its a great walk through huge trees and winding pathway over small water canals. One must understand that birds are very shy and hard to spot without the trained eyes. We found others with small kids screaming all the way, complaining that they... More
