If you catch the train the route to Ryozen-ji is not immediately obvious - nothing in English. The temple is lovely and being the first temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage it is quite busy with pilgrims getting organised for their trips. The shop at the temple has everything a pilgrim could want and stocks the book in English Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide which is invaluable if you plan to do any temple hopping. The lanterns in the temple are beautiful.

This temple is the No.1 temple on the list of 88 temples where pilgrims must visit in Shikoku. It is one of the oldest Japanese Buddhism temples in Japan. The structures are mainly built of wood set out around a small pond.

This is the temple where the 88 Shikoku temple pilgrim starts. It has lots of interesting statues, and the lantern inside the temple are wonderful. It is definitely worth visiting even if you've been to other temples before.

In front of it there are stores which sells everything people need to do the pilgrimage. It's really interesting.

It is not v far from Tokushima but you need to walk 10-15 mins after alighting from Bando station. Though the temple is quite nice in terms of architecture, we were a little disappointed as the place is rather small and don’t have a lot to offer. Nonetheless this is an important place being the first stop of the 88 pilgrimage temple route..on our way back to the station, we caught some glimpses of the sunset in this rather quiet residential town.

Ryozenji is temple 1 and where most henro start off. The grounds are a bit cluttered but charming nonetheless. You can "practice" your set of rituals here -- bell ringing, candle and incense lighting, sutra chanting, etc. You can also buy all the gear you would want to be properly attired as a henro. The ladies in the shop are all helpful, can speak some english and will recommend what you would need for your walk.

This is the first temple to visit of Shikoku 88 temple. It is simple but beautiful. The woodwork on the temple seems detailed, and the atmosphere is so calming. I felt very refreshed after visiting here. If you like the historical buildings and Japanese culture, you would like this place too. I loved it!

This is the first temple on the 88-temple Shikoku pilgrimage, and is well worth a visit, even if you do not plan on doing the entire trek. The temple grounds are fairly small, but beautifully landscaped with a koi pond in the middle. This is the place to go for all of your "o-henro goods," or supplies for the pilgrimage, from white clothes to walking stick, prayer beads to maps of the temples.

As the 1st Temple of my Henro Pilgrimage it holds a special place in my heart. Just a short walk from Bando train station. There are 2 stores where you can buy Henro gear. Its a beautiful temple.

this temple is the first and last temple about the Shikoku 88 temples where pilgrims must visit. If you are going by train, take off Bando station and go out of the station and directly on the left on the small road, continue until you can see it on your right. It's not far from the station but no indication in English so if you don't have wifi connection, it may take time.
This temple is really a beautiful peacefull place. when you're in, there is a small pond, very nice. there is also a pagode. a place you really should go to see
