Plan the trip yourself and don’t use fifty degrees. We spent 1750$ for a train ride from Oslo to Haugastol ( on car 10 which did not exist) for bikes at haugastol (perfect for biking) a dinner breakfast and packed lunch in Finse 1222 (worst room facing parking lot not glacier) packed lunch and dinner and one night at Fretheim (also horrible room with horrible buffet and horrible dinner) Do start at Haugastol and bike to Finse (request room with view of glacier) bike to Vatnahalsen and stay in the quaint hotel. You can ride your bike to Flam the next morning just in time to get out of that tourist trap and either take train to Bergen or boat to Bergen

This is a mountain road built as an access road during the construction of the Bergensbanen (Oslo to Bergen train line) in 1904. About 82 km (50 miles) long, it crosses some of the most beautiful areas of central Norway. Mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, glaciers all come together along the road. Finse is the highest point of the Bergensbanen, and is well above the tree line. This is a paradise for hikers, but it has become especially popular with bikers: the 50 miles will test your mettle and provide great visual rewards in exchange.

This was a beautiful ride but we made a few mistakes, 1. We drove from Oslo thinking we could go to Cafe Rallaren with our car then bike to Flam then get the train back. It turns out you can't really drive to Myrdal station/Cafe Rallaren so you're best going to Flam and getting the train up then biking down. Probably should have thought to do that in the beginning so please heed our advice. 2. Walk the steep hairpins. To the staff members credit he suggested it and there was even a sign but I thought I'd be fine. Nope. It's so hilly and gravely that I lost my balance in a rut and tumbled over resulting in huge scrapes down my arms. We were pretty buggered given there was no first aid kit at the cafe along the way. 3. Enjoy the ride! We stopped LOADS and did it comfortably in 2.5 hours.

We rented bikes in Myrdal and biked the 21 KM down to Flam along the Rallarvegen - the old "Navvies" road. Totally enjoyable. Got to see the scenery up close - the train ride up is a good introduction. The bike ride down is the best. Stop at the Goat farm along the way for some great cheese.
