About
Esperaza hat museum brings together the machines and various equipments which constituted the production lines for the felt bell and then the finished hat, a video of which retraces the 25 steps necessary, if not indispensable, to the development of A felted hat of very high quality. Two spaces in the form of workshops "crowd and appropriation" raise both the veil on the manufacture and the problems related to the mechanical evolution dating from the industrial revolution. Photographs, commented works and models of headwear complete the illustration of these different phases, giving a technical and historical overview of this once recognized world-wide industry. The Musee d'Esperaza and the Association "Les Amis du Musee de la Chapellerie" are pleased to welcome you, thanks to a dynamic team, anxious before anything else to share your passion for this art of hat making. They have Brought back to life a true inheritance, witnesses of the traditions of the daily life that once made the wealth of Esperaza.

I visited this museum with my husband. We both found the museum interesting. It provided interesting insights into both the hat making process and the industrial history of the region.

Small museum with token 1€ entry fee. It is located in the same building as the Dinosaur Museum.
Very interesting interior and a good add-on before or after the larger Dinosaur Museum.

What a pleasant surprise we had when we visited this museum yesterday! There is a brilliant explanatory DVD, with English subtitles, explaining the processes of hat-making. Then, a wonderfully complete collection of machinery and equipment, which was enough to satisfy my mechanically enthusiastic husband. I enjoyed the whole thing. Old photos of the town and workers broadened the experience. Nice friendly helpful staff. Only 2 euros per adult. Highly recommended.

We have been visiting the “hat museum” for 11 years and this was the best visit yet.

The introductory video is now available dubbed in English and this enhances the whole experience. The maitre D allowed us to watch the video as a party of 4 rather than join in with the large group of French visitors. The exhibits are great once you’ve understood the video but could be enhanced with an explanation in English. The latest addition to the museum is a selection of hats used in the film of Les Miserables and also the Three and Four Musketeers.

Health and Safety would have had a field day if they had been around on the 1930’s. who knew that making hats was so dangerous with massive vats of sulphuric acid being used in the processing of the felt and all the fluff and red hot steam!

There is the opportunity to purchase a hat for ones self at the end of the visit.

The photographs of Esperaza in its hey day are wonderful and I feel that more could be made of these perhaps selling prints of them or even producing them as table mats etc.

We all enjoyed our visit .

Mrs. Jakie hello, it is with great pleasure that we welcome your generous testimony, thanks to this noble profession that has disappeared today. Be assured of your dearest and most sincere friendship. It's a pleasure to see you again!!!

This is a nice place to take your other half if they are interested in history or in hats. There is no audio tour but they have a folder with explanation.

Great discovery of the world of hat-making. Too bad all this industrial know-how has disappeared.
Very interesting exhibition. Very welcome.

Very nice little museum that shows the whole process of making a wool hat.

We also learn that it was in the Aude that cowboy hats were made in the USA.
