We arrived at Katakolon on 30th. October 2012 on a cruise ship (MSC Opera).

I had done a lot of research on the internet with regards to trips. There really only seems to be 2 things you can do if arriving on a cruise ship for 4 or 5 hours.

1/ A MUST - visit Ancient Olympia.

You can do this by booking a shore excursion from your cruise line, that's if you are rich! Alternatively you can book a local taxi driver, who appear to get raving reviews ... but they are also very expensive. Or you can book return travel from literally just outside the cruise terminal via GEO Travel. At 10 EUROS each it's very reasonable. You can book in advance using their website but you have to pay when you get there. Their office is really easy to find. It has clear signage on the shop front and there are people outside touting for business. They do not have facilities to take credit card payment so make sure that you have enough EUROS. They stuck to departure and return times very strictly so don't be late getting back to the bus. The bus was very comfortable and modern and the trip to Olympia took about 30 mins. You also need some EUROS for admission fees in to the archaeological site (Ancient Olympia) and the museum, if required. You can buy just one or a combi ticket at 6 or 9 EUROS. They only give you 2 hours at Olympia, which they say is enough time to do shopping as well. Although there were a lot of shops and restaurants at Olympia we found that the full 2 hours were taken up with the archaeological site (Ancient Olympia) and the museum.

2/ The port/village of Katakolon has lots of shops and restaurants very close to the ships docked. After the GEO tour to Olympia we were disappointed that we didn't have more time to browse and shop here.

Leaving the cruise ship in Katakolon, you walk through the tiny port. Geo Travel tours is across the street from the port. We booked Geo Travel transit to Olympia over the internet in advance. Several other vendors were on the street, trying to get walk-on business. Because of the competition, Geo Travel charged me less than we had previously agreed to pay. Their discounted fare pleased me.

The bus ride is about 30 minutes each way.

The only downside is that you only get 2 hours at the Olympia ruins and archeological museum. I would have preferred 3-4 hours. But for the price and ease of transit, I would choose Geo Travel again.

We booked a return coach trip whilst our ship was in port. We were told how important it was to remember your coach number and make sure we were on that coach for return to port.

When we got to the coach park to take us back to Katakolon, the driver had let anyone on our bus with any number, thus causing mega problems. He didn't speak much English and we had to stand up on the coach for a 5 minute journey to another coach. They then started arguing over coach numbers.

Not the most relaxing or enjoyable experience, especially when you have a ship to catch!

We have been to the Olympics before so there was no point paying the price the cruise ship was asking for. Tried to book a taxi tour from katakolon which may cover other sites, but could not the one recommended, so booked instead with Geo travel, a new operator about which little seemed to have been written about. As it turned out there was a taxi strike on the day our cruise ship arrived, so we thought that was a bit of luck. But Geo travel which provides a bus to Olympia and return for 10 Euro has its teething problem. We were booked for 9.15 am. But the lady at the door told us we were the only ones booked, so they were not going till they got more. Half an hour later, there were seven of us, but she said that she needed ten before the bus would go but she would refer us to a van driver who would take us. Eventuallly others turned up and we finally made it at 1030. The duration was supposed to be for three hours, one for the trip there and back, and two for the visit. To make up for it, they gave another half hour, so we finished with sufficient time for the Olympia site, archaelogical museum, Olympia museum and modern Olympia itself. However, the company also provided an uninvited guide, who asked for 3 euros tip from everyone for explaining a few things on the bus, showing us the "best view to take a picture showing the Olympic running tract", and how to buy tickets, and where the museums are. The cost of the whole trip was much lower than taking a taxi or joining the tour from the cruise ship but It might have been better if Geo travel just charged 13 euros for the whole thing. So for those brave enough to risk booking on the internet with this new company with friendly people and a clean bus who may improve with time, this is certainly an alternative choice.

We made the mistake of contact Geotravel, which offers a bus to get to the site of Olympia (40 min drive). This agency is to avoid (despite the price offered) because they are not serious. In fact, they spend their time to rally the people in the street to fill the bus, which cost us more than 45 minutes to go, when there were already many people waiting. In return, the time fixed for the departure was early compared to other bus companies.

First, some perspective - you're on this tour as , like me, you didn't want to pay the cruise line prices. The tour is timed to coincide with the arrival and departure times of ships in the port. We arrived at the office at 10.30 and were told that the bus would leave at 10.45. We finally boarded the bus at 11.00 and after complaints from one or two passengers, left for Olympia at 11.10. Personally I couldn't understand why people were complaining. We were sitting in a very comfortable air-conditioned coach with ample time for the trip.
The journey itself was very pleasant with the driver using the PA system to comment on ineteresting facts and places en-route. We arrived in Olympia at about 11.40 and were dropped off approx 3-4 minutes walk from the archeological site entrance, with instructions to be at the drop-off point by 14.00 for the journey back to Katakolon. The coach arrived by 14.02 and after waiting for a couple of stragglers set off at 14.05 - arriving at Katakolon by 14.40.
The time we had at Olympia was ample to visit both the site and the museum as well as grab a quick beer before the journey back. If you were looking to spend time shopping then you'd probably need more time, but for the visit to the archeological site and museum this tour is ideal - and for only €10pp return.

Just back from a tour this morning with Geo Travel to Olympia.
Highly recommended as I was very pleased and satisfied (as I was a bit wary after reading some reviews here)
Yes, you need to wait 10-15 minutes to board the bus initially but it is understandable, I believe.
Easy, friendly ride to Olympia.
John, the tour leader, was kind and very informative. A real helpful person who deals efficiently with customers. Yes, it is expected to tip extra but then he was worth it. Bravo!
I honestly recommend this tour. Yes had an issue whereby i was charged slightly extra once i arrived (from the price quoted via email) but this, hopefully thanks yo John who advised me accordingly, should be sorted tomorrow in Athens (aa i was so pleased today, I booked the athens tour tomorrow). Will keep you posted if this small issue was amended or not.
Yet, if in Katakolon, think about this tour.

We Landed by Ship at Katakolon and we found this bus convenient to take us to Olympia. They fill this unscheduled bus fast when a ship enters port. The driver, who appeared to also be the owner of the Coach, explains a thing or two. We arrived at the coach station in Olympia which is nearby the archaeological site and museums and within reach of the city center. The coach picked us up from the same site at the established time,

We made the mistake of taking this bus from the port to ancient Olympia. We only chose it because it was one of the first tours we encountered when we go off our ship. they claim to have a guide but he didn't really help us much and didn't guide us around the ruins. We had to wait a long time so they could get more people to fill the bus. They charged us 20 Euros each but others were only charged 10. Too much for just a bus trip.
