An unusual natural setting, one of a kind, a destination not to be missed on an Icelandic tour. In Landmannalaugar the scenery seems like a rainbow of colours, the mountains of volcanic rock (rhyolite) take on colors ranging from yellow to red, from gray to green, as well as large expanses of black lava with craters covered in green moss. Here too there is no shortage of fumaroles rising from the ground in many positions along the route. These infinite shades of color associated with unique views are the real reason why the area is very popular. Near the large car park there is a restaurant and a series of geothermal spring pools for relaxing. There is also a campsite where many hikers camp and then set off on treks lasting a few days on challenging routes. For all the others, like myself, two circular routes, a shorter one and a longer one (to be preferred), the latter takes about 3 hours including many inevitable stops to admire the surrounding panorama. To reach this natural park the use of a 4x4 vehicle is mandatory, in the past there have been several episodes in which normal cars have been stuck requiring the intervention of a tow truck which I am told costs no less than a thousand euros.

Beautiful surroundings for various activities. We wanted / have walked, but there was no sign of the planned route. The marking did not match various descriptions. Nevertheless, a wonderful experience in a breathtaking landscape. Hard walk, but also by inexperienced hikers definitely to do. Good shoes, warm clothes, food and drinks and go!!!!

Well marked routes in different difficulty and good facilities at the tourist center. Remember the fly if you come in the summer. take route 208 north, if you are not a garved 4x4 driver. It is bad the first 3 km but from there it is fun and bumpy.

Spectacular! Need a 4x4 to travel the road to get there. Parking must be booked in the morning on parka site, otherwise they do not let in before 15:00. To get there the only road without fords is 26+f26+f208 from Selfoss. There are about 50 km of unpaved road where you have to go very slowly being full of stones. There are various paths, we climbed to the top of the Brannisteinsalda volcano. An indescribable panorama! We walked about 3 hours maybe a little longer, worth it! Then I bathe at 45 degrees!

This was my 7th trip to Iceland and 4th visit to the Landmannalaugar area. This will be from a photographer's perspective and one who self-drove into the area. I've gone via three routes. I've driven F225 to F208, F208 from the north and F208 from the east. East 208 has the most river crossings. I've done them in August in everything from a Dacia Duster to a Land Rover. Camping or sleeping in the vehicle. F225 is the tourbus route and easiest but the road is full of washboard. Lots of good scenery from a drone's view. F208 from the north is longer but very scenic and includes some nice falls. Also the easiest gas access from Landmannalaugar. Once you've reached the campground area, you can park outside the water crossing and walk in, or go for the crossing. Slow and not through the middle is my advice. This is a great place to hang out for a day or two, get a quick shower and watch the weather come and go. By now you have realized the weather forecast is not worth much more than a few hours out. I recommend two hikes in the area. Across the lava fields into the Vondugil valley, and Sudurnamur Ridge up above. Google Landmannalaugar day hikes for further explanations. Sunrise and sunset light is amazing here if you can catch it. A clear sky will light up the various ridges around the area. Even from the parking lot. But if you can climb Sudurnamur or Blue Peak, it will be even better. Clear blue skies also add color to the rivers as seen from above. Feel free to contact me with specific questions - Mike
