Our friendly guide Ahmed, whom we chose based on a recommendation from friends, picked us up at the airport in Dire Dawa and had organised accommodation in a traditional Harar house. He took us to feed the hyenas, which was an amazing experience. Afterwards we tried some local dishes. The next day we took a long walk through the old city with its colourfully painted walls, visited the Harar museum, a coffee roastery and fed birds of prey. We also managed to do some souvenir shopping. It's a shame that we only had one day, as there are more things to see in the city and surrounding areas. I'd definitely go back. I highly recommend Ahmed. He's a funny guy who speaks good English and knows a lot about his city. When he dropped us back at the airport there were some problems with the flight and he actually stayed nearby to make sure that we take off safely. I hope I'll come back to Harar one day.

We had an amazing long weekend with my colleague in June 2021 in the city of Harar thanks to the awesome guide Ahmed. Just in 3 days he showed us all the beauty of this diverse city, its culture, food, history, architecture, hyenas and eagle feeding. Upon our request he organised a tour on very short notice to see elephants outside the city. I’m definitely recommend to visit Harar, if you are in Ethiopia - it’s one of the most beautiful and interesting places. And I’m definitely recommend to plan your trip with Ahmed’s firm! Harar is an amazing, unique city and one of the highlights of our five-month overland trip across Africa. It's full of life and we were lucky to experience it with no other tourists due to the Covid-19 crisis. It is a place where you discover something new around every corner. A guide can provide a great deal of context and history, as well as ensuring you don't miss the key sites; we were with Joel for two days who was fantastic. We saw numerous facets of the city, including the fascinating markets, hyena feeding, a coffee roastery, a blacksmith, some great local cafes and met some of Joel's friends. Joel was extremely knowledgeable and good company, and charged a fair price unlike some of the other guides we asked. His details are 0909623864 and joelharar@yahoo.com.

I am from Addis Ababa and I came to visit Harar and Diredawa and I had a great time there, the people are very friendly. I saw the ancient city of Harar, its gates, Harar wall, a view of old City jagol from Mount Hakim and At night, I feed the hyenas with my hands. It's very nice of Joel, a native of the harar city, a young tour guid who showed me all. I met him on harar city . I reccomend him highly, contact Joel when you come to Harar, his details are

A MUST on any visit to Ethiopia. I was only there for a day but could easily spend3+ days in & around Harar. I'm not somebody who usually takes a guide/writes reviews, but I would HIGHLY recommend this to really make the most of the city - we were able to find all sorts in the main market (& at decent price thanks kindly to negotiation by Joel), invited to homes Hariri homes and funeral gatherings. Experiences made so much more valuable by being able to understand more than my few words of Amharic. Joel +251 909623864 our guide & friend is an entertaining, kind, easygoing educated local of the city, trained as an engineer who gives his time to show you all corners of the city, depending if you have strong legs for that! He offers his time, energy, history and spirit; you pay what you wish. Please treat him well if you contact him to explore. Either way, enjoy getting lost in the markets & put Harar on your list...

First of all, Harar is an amazing, exotic, and enchanting city, full of narrow, often colorful alleys that are a joy to wander around and explore - and with very few tourists, it is an authentic place that you feel you have all to yourself!
Secondly, Harar was made even more amazing by our wonderful guide, Naod. He was so friendly, knowledgeable, easy to get along with, and took us to so many places in such a short time! He knows everyone in the old town, so we were able to visit many traditional family houses, which was a plus.
I highly recommend Naod if you want to get the full experience of Harar, especially if you have a short time (though I wish we were there longer)! You can contact him at naodharar@gmail.com or on whatsapp at +251 94 785 0273. Hopefully we will return someday! :)

Harar is really a captivating little city. The colors, the vibe....the hyenas... :)
I don't always utilize city guides. I enjoy wandering around sometimes on my own. But I can say without reservation that I would not have had the same experience here without the help and guidance of Ahmed.
Ahmed knows every nook and cranny, and every tiny alleyway of the city. He also seems to know every single person who lives there. He is a truly kind and generous soul, and with a great sense of humor as well.
Ahmed led us through the maze of colorful streets and markets. There is a magic that seems to flow within these walls. We stopped for a coffee break, watching from above as the world went by in the center of the city. I fed slabs of meat to the kites, watching as the giant birds swooped down to collect their snack. He also made sure I had the experience I dreamed about with the hyenas (and made sure I got to spend extra time with them).
Randomly, I had read about something called qasil powder, which is used in some parts of east Africa as part of a skin care regimen. I'm always on a quest, when I travel, to find some sort of secret fountain of youth formula :). Amazingly, Ahmed knew the exact spot in town to find it, and led me to the woman who sold it at the local market. As I said, he knows every nook and cranny of the city!
It's obvious Ahmed takes great pride in his beautiful hometown, and wants to ensure visitors to Harar get the best overall experience there. I'm so grateful to have met Ahmed. He is a great ambassador to the city of Harar, and I now count him as a friend, all the way across the world. I hope to return one day to this stunning city, and I won't hesitate to ask Ahmed to be my local friend and guide.

I had an awesome time thanks to my guide Joel. He spoke perfect English and took me everywhere I wanted to go. I was safe and comfortable the entire time and had so much fun. I highly recommend to the travel community if you want to learn the history and embrace the culture.

It was a great experience to walk around the town with a wonderful guide, Joel. Without a guide, you would easily miss a lot of things and it's hard to get to the right place inside the wall. Joel is knowledgable about the history, culture of the city. I met a bunch of tour guides in different places and he is one of the best guides. I highly recommend him.
