The Harar Museum is set in a beautiful old home where the last Emperor, Haile Selasie, spent a good part of his childhood. The inner nerd in my found that fact part of the draw of the place.

The museum had about four rooms with some interesting old artifacts such as old coins - some of which dated from the ancient Arab trade route time...plus some really tiny coins from before Harar was part of Ethiopia/Abyssinia. There were some old swords and Qurans. There's also a small art exhibit which showed some of the cultural side of Harar and made the rest of our visit even more interesting.

Even if you make your stop brief, it's worth a stop.

This is a small museum which has a cheap entrance cost (30 birr). Two rooms and a dozen displays. As there really isn’t much to see or do in Harar this is worth a quick visit. The average rating is given only because it is so cheap and the garden is nice.

Harar city is located in Easteren Ethiopia, known as Sunrise gate of Ethiopia,,City of love, City of Tolerance,....Most of the People in Ethiopia would tell you this
It was once the Islamic center before the Middle east,

why walled city?
1.The Muslim Sultanate constructed a wall surrounding the city to protect the city from the aggression by the the christian Kingdom of North Ethiopia . The wall the the China wall!!.It has only five gates Still this time the entrance is via these 5 gates, the people living there are called HARARI they are Semitic Language speakers and look like Arabs all Muslims,

What to see inside?
-2.the Rectangular house making called Jugols, like house of Midlle east, More than 111 paths ways made from marble, Harari house furniture Uniue from that of the rest of Ethiopians (SEE IT),
-At the Night see the people feeding the wild animal Hyena, It is a symbol Hahari people give love not only for human beings but also for the wild animals

Why city of Tolarence?
3.You can witness this when you see the Christian church inside the walled city surrounded only by Muslims....most of the people/ tour guides would tell you Harar is the best place where you see Christians and Muslims live in harmony.... Actually there is no fight between the current Muslims and Christians in Ethiopia in general

What more?
on the way to Harar, from any direction I was sad when I saw the coffee Plantations are now substituted by Chat plant. Chat/Khat has Addictive stimulant in its leaf,Some one even you have never seen before will invite to chew Chat.....at the end they ask you money/ to buy chat for them for another time....so funny

Even though admission charge is only 30ETB, there is not a whole lot to see. I found the little model a bit useful in orientating myself in the walking tour around the walls.

We didn't spend long in the museum (you REALLY don't need to) but it was worth checking out the old coins, religious texts, household items, as well as the contemporary paintings by a Harari artist and bits of Harari stories. Not a MUST-DO-NOW but great if you've got the time.
