I passed by this on my way into town and was intrigued. It has a lock system and several levels and dates back hundreds of years in a different era where transport and irrigation required the canal to be built.

This 207km waterway was built in the 18th and 19th centuries. It had 49 locks and was used to transport corn. At Fromista the locks overcome 46 feet. The tourist information office here is very helpful.

Dont just walk along the banks of this canal. Stop. Look at it from all angles. From both banks. It is worth the time.

I didn't know much about the Canal de Castilla until I sort of stumbled upon it whilst walking the Camino. It's quite an engineering marvel bringing water for irrigation to that region of Spain, but on top of that the walk alongside the canal is...More

Walked along about 4km of this whilst doing the Camino. Very picturesque and peaceful. The view down through the lock at Fromista is rather good.
