dont stop there to see the citadelle, there is nothing special to see, and anyway the fort cant be visited at the top as it is a school now.
The lining of tourist shops sellings often goods done in bali.. ruined the view in the old town streets... and curiously, most of them have their credit card machine ´broken’ and only accepted cash.. ...

i prefered 100 times the more authentic « collonge la rouge » or turenne or espelette close by

My late arrival in the town gave me the chance to see only the Citadelle. Streets are small and narrow. The pavement looks old and keeps the history of old times.

On the morning we left early and the fog was covering the village. Once we hiked up the neighbourhood we were able to see parts of the village from above. Spring should be even more exciting to be there.

Buen camino!

We were coming from Pau and we were going to stop here to visit the citadel. Impossible!! This is the most clogged place we have encountered in our whole long tour, it is full of people, you do not know where to stop, let alone park even a bicycle. We did a couple of laps, one more challenging than the other, extricating ourselves through narrow streets and streets full of campers and motor homes, people walking in the middle of the road. It was a stressful and disappointing experience together and so we went further. I haven't seen such a crowd all at once since I was in Peshawar. That's too bad.

We loved this town from which the French Camino de Santiago begins. Well-kept buildings and streets with many shops and restaurants. It is quite designed for the pilgrim and that is why it is very crowded. The road to get there from Roncesvalles is quite slow and curvy which makes the journey difficult.

A good vantage point to look down at the historic medieval village and the surrounding Basque countryside. Very open space with some of the plaques with the info in English as well as French and Basque.

A 17th c. fortress sitting on the highest point of the town. A somewhat steep uphill climb near Porte Saint-Jacques with amazing views of town and the Pyrenees.

A beautiful citadelle with so much history. Very pretty cobbled streets, interesting shops and restaurants. The walk around the citadelle is very nice with some stunning views. Definitely worth a visit.

I highly recommend taking a walking tour of the citadel le. It is very centrally located and the views of the surrounding countryside are amazing. I just walked and sledding go into any buildings. Can be a bit treacherous when wet. Good way to orient yourself before walking to Spain

The citadel is perched above the town of Saint Jean Pied de Port. From the citadel there are excellent views, of not only the town, but the surrounding valleys and the Pyrenees off in the distance. The citadel itself is very basic but still worth the walk up to see it.

This is a town full of pilgrims and tourists. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988 and is really quite lovely with its elegant old buildings and narrow cobblestone streets. Since the middle ages, it has been the starting point on the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela.
