Went here recently and enjoyed the display as well as the locale which is a historic bishop’s house and prison. You can walk down to the basement and get a real feel for the place. It was used as a prison and was also a bishop’s house at one point. Modest admission charge

What an interesting site. While the language in San Jean is French many ot the exhibits have signs explaing what you are seeing in several languages including English. There are three levels to explore. Most of the museum has to do with the history of the area while the upper most level is an art gallery with pieces on display by local artists.

Despite nearly all explanations only in French, this is an interesting place to visit. The Camino pilgrimage related materials are fairly self explanatory and worth looking at. The cellar is very cool in temperature and a nice place to poke around in a hot afternoon. Architecturally very interesting as well. Even though I was relying on decades old French reading skills, I found the place very informative.

Summer temperatures away from the coast can easily reach the high 30s on a regular basis so if you are in Saint Jean Pied de Port with some time to kill a visit to the prison is a nice idea. Be warned that all information is French only, even after several years of national tourism boards promoting the speaking of other languages, some places still haven't got the message.
