This is a very simple, but one of the most dignified and moving monuments on Omaha beach.
It's dedicated to insanely brave 1st US infantrymen who disembarked the vessels with many German obstacles around, both in sea and on the beach and being exposed to open enemy fire like clay pigeons on a shooting range.
Their courage backed by heavy naval fire from the supporting destroyers made them unwilling to stop so they captured the beach till late morning and further a mile inland till the end of the day. The rest is history. Thank you.

There is a parking lot beside the exit of the American Cemetary and it leads to this place. Just follow the path from the carpark towards the ocean. The memorial looks out over Omaha Beach. It is quite large and close to the path. Going further leads you to the memorial for the Fifth Engineer Special Brigade and the WN62. There are seats around the memorial so you are able to take your time and enjoy the view and the silence.

The Memorial to the 1st Infantry is on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach and pays tribute to the brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice. A visit to Omaha Beach was a must for me, and this memorial is a poignant part of that visit.

What an awesome Memorial to those from "The Big Red One" who helped storm the beach at Omaha and help liberate Normandy! It right on top of the bluff, which gives a very tremendous 'view' of the beach that they stormed. Highly recommended....!!!!

A quick stop, but needed to see memorial to the 1st ID at Omaha beach. We stopped here and pondered the accomplishments of this famed division.

I just cannot imagine having been in that first wave coming onto the beach. After standing at the top, among the German defensive positions, the line of sight, the range they had, just amazing to consider anyone crossing the beach. Rommel had seen the landing beaches in Italy from earlier in the war and noted that these were very similar to those. He choose to fortify them with the knowledge that this was a likely spot for the landing invasion. Luckily he was in Germany on June 6, a leadership vacuum allowed time for the invasion forces to proceed.

There is a parking area on top next to the US Cemetery, you can't drive to the beach (one way street). The alternative is to find the road in Colleville itself and turn towards "Centre de Pleine Nature d'Omaha Beach" via La Fontaine road.
The site itself has 2 memorials but you can walk down towards the beach and you will see 2 German bunkers in reasonable good conditions with several smaller gun emplacements. From the monuments there are great views across Omaha beach and you should be able to see the Mullbery harbour at Arromanche.
Easy access to the Omaha beach (like from the next door US cemetery).
It could be a less then 60 minute visit, but if you do decent to the beach and walk around you will find that it will take around an hour at least.

Great experience, grateful to be able to see this in person. This was one of a few stops in a tour that we took out of Paris.

The site, the monument, and what it is for is exceptional. It's a simple walk from a small parking lot and the memorial itself looks over the beach and some rocks below - simply stunning. You can feel the aura that is there and how sacred this site is. A must see if you are in the area and are American (or not).
