Our group of 9 made an unannounced stop at Chateau Ahon at the end of the day, because our children wanted to see the animals. I’m so glad we did! This is a charmingly hospitable family-owned winery, and even though we dropped in without any appointment, and were pressed for time, the daughter efficiently arranged for us to take a self-guided tour through the grounds, ending with a tasting. The walking tour was very fun! The placards along the way are informative and interesting, and you can progress at your own pace. The animals are charming, especially Mirabelle the donkey. We turned back rather than finish the path, so that we’d have enough time for a tasting of the wines. The tasting was pleasant and generous. Even the children got to taste a sparkling grape juice! The boutique is well-stocked with wine and canned goods that will give you ideas for a picnic. I highly recommend visiting this winery, especially with children!

Very good tour from an informative and engaging guide. We were part of a half day tour from the Bordeaux Tourist Centre and not sure if you can can do a tour without being part of a group. Wines were okay but we didn't buy any partly because we were limited with what we could carry. Had just missed the harvest which was unfortunate but still worth a visit. You cannot get into the chateau.

I like wine. I only quite like my children (on a good day). How to combine, while roaming the vineyards of Bordeaux. Answer (grazed from an online websearch - Grauniad article, I think) is: go to Chateau Saint Ahon. This is a pocket-sized operation, but beautifully set close to Bordeaux (we drove in 20 minutes, there is apparently easy train access). The children - eldest is 10, youngest is 6 - were sufficiently captivated by the quiz that our self-guided tour of the vineyard and paddocks passed without too much botheration for the adults. We were able to soak in the info, and enjoy the autumn countryside. The end-of-tour tasting also got the children involved - colouring at their own table while being served their own tasting (grape-juice). This allowed us to enjoy the (delicious) rose, the (delicious) lighter red and the (very delicious) signature red. These wines are only available from one outlet in London (chiz) and air-freight rates seemed punitive - otherwise, we'd have sent ourselves a decent sized order of these excellent value, high quality wines. Charming staff too - good spoken English and polite enough to tolerate (what we hoped was) our French. Highly recommended.

We wanted to visit a vineyard whilst in the area but also wanted to keep our son entertained. The venue did both with a small walking trail that informed both child and adults and allowed us to wander through the grounds and past the vineyards. We were welcomed and the walk explained with welcoming staff who all spoke good English. We walked around the grounds answering questions about wine and winemaking from boards around the trail. We finished with a short tasting with grape juice for our son. Again with helpful, welcoming staff who spoke good english. This is an activity that can be enjoyed at all ages and was informative and gave us a good introduction to the area and its wines.

We came here on an urban wine tour offered by the tourist office in Bordeaux. It was an enjoyable tour, we learnt a lot, however we did find that it wasn’t extensive, we didn’t see the grapes up close, or the full process of the wine production just some of the steel vats. We saw the oak barrels where they age the wine which was nice, and it was enjoyable to taste the wine.
