We rented a kayak, and went for a 32 km long paddle trip. This was kind of the highlight of the route. Later we went to visit the Grotte Chauvet as well, where we learnt, this arc was an important landmark for the cave men, to identify the entrance of the cave.
If you are around the area, come and see it, but be prepared for a bunch of tourists on the beach, in the water and in kayaks.

The Pont D'arc is a natural rock bridge arched over the Ardèche river and a popular spot for canoeing and swimming. We drove here, parked in a (unlevelled) lot nearby and walked upto the river bank to appreciate the view. Very interesting.

Pont d’Arc is amazing! I booked our whole trip around it and despite being busy it was still wonderful, so much bigger than I imagined. We parked on the south side and walked down to the beach. Swimming upstream under the arch with deep blue skies overhead is a life affirming experience. Highly recommended (avoid the crowds if you are lucky enough to able to!)

Passing under the Pont D’Arc, a spectacular archway in the rock was incredible. There were people abseiling around here and jumping from the rocks in the river.

We stopped here to stretch our legs and watch a few canoeists go by. The small beach area was very busy for mid morning and must get crowded in the height of summer

A nice place along the gorges road, very touristic, so full of tourists swimming and rawing. Probably to avoid at least the weekends in summer, but always worth at least a stop for some pictures.

Unbelievably cool. Still in good pristine shape. Not overly mobbed but the area can hold a lot of campers/guests. Don’t forget to visit some some of the caves in the area (chauvet2, avern orgnac). Worth at least 2-3 days in the area.

This place is not only historic but amazing place to visit.
I am not able to describe how I feel when I dip in the river and swim under this natural bridge.
Definitely a Must place to visit

As if the winding road with its stunning views were not enough, this natural arch formation over the River Ardeche is utterly amazing. If you want to stop and look at it, you will have to find a car park, as stopping on the road is strictly forbidden.

Is there a recommended campsite nearby that people can recommend for summer period?

Yes, there is a campsite right in front of the Arch that leads onto the beach. I am not sure how difficult it is to get into however as this is a very busy place.

We will be renting a car in Lyon and driving to see the Chauvet Cave. Can anyone let me know anything about the road conditions? Also are there kayak rentals near the arch or is it just canoes?

Road conditions are fine - motorway has tolls, then off the motorway the roads are tarmac and fine too. I think you can hire both kayaks and canoes in town.

Can anyone tell us if planning a picnic on the beach in mid-October is a good idea?

Yes it is. But you should Organise an alternative for bad weather.
