About
Since 2001 the Clunisian Priory of La Charite-sur-Loire has been one of the biggest restoration sites in Burgundy. In 2003, the Benedictine gardens and St Laurent Church were the first monuments to be restored, and the chapter house and one of the cloister galleries were inaugurated in January 2008. The priory is gradually coming out of the shadows and today it offers a fascinating look at the town and its history. In the high season the priory hosts many shows and concerts, bringing it back to life.

So this is or was a huge church for its day. Different time periods and one of the hubs for Catholics. So for a church site from 12th century it’s pretty amazing. Right in center of town. The town itself is very cute as well located right on the Loire River.

Great stopover on our way to Chablis. Picturesque historical town with wonderful bridge and cathedral. You can find here many great boulangeries.

We went here on a suggestion from a tour guide, and it's pretty incredible. I think it dates from 1100's? (maybe even older). Takes just a few minutes to see, but it's worth the time to think of the history...

Worth a visit if you are in the area. The outside ruins and ramparts are less impressive, but still excellent architecture in the priory.

Be sure to walk down to the river.

Lovely church. Beautiful vaulted ceilings. The Windows include both old stained and very modern stained Windows in bright colours ,oranges ,red and yellow. Lovely side chapels for contemplating. A service was due so we could not linger. The flowers were being delivered and filled the front of the church. Outside were the remains of a Benedictine monastery and set in a restful garden . Very beautiful.

A Unesco World heritage site, the priory is now completely renovated. It is really worth a look not only for the building itself, a marvelous Romanesque Benedictine abbey, but for its fabulous exhibition. La Charite is well known for its antique bookstores, book festivals and its famous "Festival du Mot" each year. It is why after his Paris exhibition, famous cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé decided to exhibit in the Priory of the Abbey. A must if you are around!

It's just big, very open, meaning the children can nose about without getting into trouble. We're not great history buffs but this held our interest for hours.

Had never heard of this village. Cycled for a day along the river Loire. ( great, by the way) We entered the church which was Huge and clunisien. So much beauty that meets the eye, gothic churches are something but Roman churches disclose themselves less easy but when they do, they whisper about the ordinairy people and that makes one happy!
