About
A family-operated, Public Museum dedicated to preserving the life and legacy of Munshi Aziz Bhat - A Silk Route trader, pioneer, visionary, social entrepreneur, collector, patriot, husband and father. Our museum offers anyone who visits, a rare glimpse into the Indian and Central Asian trader culture of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Through its collection of artifacts and mercantile items, the museum exhibits the range of goods and services that were transported on the many maritime and overland trajectories of the Silk Routes. Apart from the commerce, the Silk Route memorabilia at the museum is an enduring peek into the lives of the many merchants, horsemen, herders, pilgrims, artisans, nomads and farmers who traversed these trader routes and evolved a culture that saw its ultimate demise with the growth of mechanized trade and reorganization of boundaries in the post-independence era.

Do take time to visit this museum if you are travelling through Kargil.
This tiny but well curated collection gives one a sense of the bustle and activity that Kargil experienced in the days of the Silk Route trade.
If you are lucky enough to find Munshiji there, he will tell you of his ancestors and their serai. The stories and the culture.
Even without him, the items, an eclectic collection of the family's goods, tell of a time when Kargil was an important stop of traders from the Far East and Central Asia and the days when people didn't think of borders and boundaries as they do now.

Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum set up in the quaint town of Kargil aspires to keep a slice of history for posterity. The private museum run by two brothers Aijaz Hussain Munshi and Gulzar Hussain Munshi showcases its rare, unseen and antique artefacts related to the Central Asian Trade. Hubble Bubble or the hookah pipes from Yarkand, rugs from Kashgar, fabrics — dyed and raw silk from Khotan in China, natural dyes, costumes, jewellery, coins, shoes, utensils, ammunition and a few photographs are few out of the 100-plus objects that are exhibited.

Museum is beautifully crafted and brings to life an era that existed between the period 1890-1940.
Museum is crafted from things left over by traders who stayed in the Kargil area Sarai run by Munshi Aziz Bhatt, himself a well respected trader.
Things used in day to day life of common people are on display. Collection also has good number of imported things brought for sale by traders.
Nice place where one can spend good 2 hours learning about past era.

Well preserved museum though it could be better arranged. Lighting could be improved. Gives a glimpse of yesteryear trading routes and the dresses they wore.

The Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum is a family-owned museum in Kargil. Munshi Aziz Bhat was a traded who operated in the ancient Silk Route and it has on display rare curios and artefacts like saddles, utensils, coins, old books, dresses and jewellery. It's a small museum but it gives a rare glimpse into the Silk Route trade of the 19th century when Kargil served as a principal trading centre. Entry ticket costs Rs 50 per adult.
