Lovely church
Sep 2019
Just a short way along the street from the town hall, this lovely Baroque church is worth a visit. Rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, it has an impressive facade and beautiful interior with an oval plan and ornately painted ceiling. Well worth a visit.

Another splendid example
Nov 2019 • Friends
If you have any jnterest in architecture or churches this is another example of wonderful baroque building with an interior so beautiful that you can easy spend time just looking upwards to the vaulted knave and immense columns either side. Really lovely place and not over run with tourism at least at the time we visited.

Stunning baroque in Scicli
Jul 2019
This jewel of Sicilian baroque is located on the pedestrianised Via Penna, just a few steps from the town hall. We experienced this magnificent place when visiting Scicli on 23 July, 2019.

The imposing exterior dates from the 1760’s and on the inside, the timbered doors, the stucco and gilded interior decorations date from the mid nineteenth century.

Another highlight is without shadow of doubt the wonderful blues and intricate decoration of the ceiling. It is worth visiting just for this ceiling decoration alone and although a lot smaller than the Domas in Modica and Ragusa, it is just as impressive inside.

One final tip not to miss was pointed out to us by a very kind, old gentleman. On the left hand side of the entrance there is a painting of Christ in an a-line white skirt, which when inverted it would suggest the shape of a chalice!

Beautiful church in Modica Alta
Sep 2018 • Couples
A beautiful church in the upper part of the town, there has been a church on this site since the 7th century. Reached by a flight of steps, it is quite an impressive sight. With it's cross on the top of the facade, it is the highest point in the whole town. You can go up the tower - I didn't but my husband did and there are amazing views over the town from here. Check with your hotel about opening times which seem to vary between website and books. Definitely make the effort to visit.

Pure baroque
May 2017 • Couples
I'm not one for late over the top baroque so the simplicity of this church came as a pleasant surprise.

The parishioners take great pride in the painting of christ in a dress which upside down looks like a chalice. If it was a contemporary painting I think it would be regarded as blasphemous!

Baroque Jewel, in the heart of Montelbano land!
Sep 2016 • Friends
This really is a wonderful and little known jewel of Sicilian Baroque, located at the far end of the pedestrianised Via Penna alongside the town hall. The imposing exterior dates from the 1760’s, and once inside the heavy timbered doors, the stucco and gilded interior decorations, date from the mid nineteenth Century. Take a moment to sit and look up at the wonderful blues and intricate decoration of the ceiling.
Just a note to the Presbytery to generate some more information in English on the background of some of the pieces on display - including Christ in an A line White Skirt - which inverted would suggest the shape of a chalice - There are some gems inside San Giovanni, which for those who love Baroque in its quieter manifestation is beautifully on display here. There are a number of other churches to visit in the main square - which I shall note to Trip Adviser and generate a review space for - as these should be included in your visit to this sweet and gently paced town in the heart of southern Baroque Italy.

Breathtaking baroque churche! Don't Miss it!

In the church of San Giovanni Evangelista you will find very expressive and particular framework depicting a Christ with a white skirt. Single original in Italy, a similar painting is in Spain in Burgos. There is allays someone to help you and tell you a short touching story about the altars. The church is open until late. Very pleasant and peaceful visit

Magnificent late Baroque Chiesa
Oct 2015 • Couples
Another shining example of magnificent late Baroque in Scicli is Chiesa di San Giovanni Evagelista. The three-order harmonious facade matches the beauty of the bright interior richly decorated with elaborate stucco ornaments and beautiful central oval painting of the ceiling. Gorgeous church!

Sitting next door to the town hall and fitting perfectly in the piazza, this church is a fine example of Sicilian Baroque and infuses a sense of calm. Worth a visit.
