It’s a park full of old locomotives, many quietly rusting away. Entrance is dirt cheap, 8Zl (less than GBP2!), and you’re free to wander about and photograph at your leisure. Fantastic! But getting there? Here’s what I did; I got a 13Zl (about GBP3) ticket at the bus station in Kraków Glówny and caught the Zakopane coach in bay G18 (upstairs but the bay may change). The tickets was for Chabówka Viaduct and the journey takes at least 75 minutes, depending on traffic. Look out for a place called Rabka, your stop at Chabówka viaduct is just after that. Ask the driver if you’re not sure. He will drop you just before the viaduct – remember this place! You cross the road, pass behind the fence, go down the hill and under the viaduct and you’re there. To get back, return to where you were dropped off, there is bus shelter. The buses are every 20 minutes. Note: have the right money as drivers don’t like messing with change. I devoted a whole day to this excursion, but then again I like locomotives!

Very interesting with rows of steam locos in the yard on which you can climb all over and examine. This makes a change from the UK practice of not being allowed on locos. There is a small charge for entry and another to take photos. We were the only visitors on site in march mid week. It closes at 3:00 in afternoon so leave at least two hours to look around. There are also diesel and electric locos to view but emphasis is on steam. Also examples of old rolling stock, a break down crane and show ploughs. We hired a taxi to take us there (they are cheaper than uk) but you can reach it by rail. There a number of working locos on site steamed occasionally for special events.

As previously review this is a must for railway enthusiasts with time in Poland. However the distance from Krakow is one hour 15 minutes by car and not about 30 minutes by bus. The Bus station, railway station [ and tram station] are now combined in a new station at Krakow which makes for a good place to start. The museum is open from 0700 to 19.00. and is a lot closer to Rabka Zdrog the ski resort and spa

It's a rather bare-bones affair: there's not a lot in terms of guides (written or human), and it's very Polish-centric (i.e., not a lot of translation). However, the ability to just wander around a large train yard with locomotives and various cars from a wide range of history is itself wonderful.

This could be a great attraction, if they only wanted to invest a bit more... Located in Chabówka, on popular route from Kraków to Polish high mountains, it's hughely overlooked by tourists, who basically just go over it on the main route overpass. And the entrance to this open air museum is right underneath the overpass. Small car park at the front, without marked bays, means cars are more abandoned there, than parked up. Tickets in a small wooden hut. Right behind it - a loco with one passanger carriage - meant to be a restaurant with some refreshements - closed when we were there. And then it's only locos and carriages in large numbers, stacked one by one on parallel tracks. It was raining a bit when we were there, so access to some trains was not that pleasant, as there's no paths, only grass, very wet indeed. How nice it would be to have paved paths reaching every exhibit... Most of those exhibits got new looking boards with description. There's a heritage train departing twice a day on weekends, reaching Kasina Wielka station after about an hours ride. Train departs from a platform next to a central square, a platform that looks like it's falling appart... And the central square, a place for events, is all grassed again, so when it rains - you will not enjoy any events with wet shoes...
