Like others, we thought the chateau was something it is not. The restored chateau houses a collection of “unusual” (at least to my taste) modern art. There was very little information provided on the history of the building or the town. It was also 11 euro per adult to get in. I would not go back.

The village of Montsoreau is one of the 150 or so “Most Beautiful Villages of France” and the castle is of course considered to be one of its highlights. It sits in a commanding position on the banks of the wide Loire river, and the views from the top of the castle are exceptional.
The castle is bare inside: no furniture, no armoury, no draperies etc..., so a permanent exhibition has been set up throughout the rooms. Sadly it is about contemporary “Art & Language” and is unlikely to wow a majority of the visitors. I personally thought it was awful. The only plus point is that there is a lot of English translation for Anglophone visitors. Entrance fee is just short of €10 per adult.

One thing you must know before you go to this chateau is that it is now an art gallery.
While we were not really impressed with the art work the views from the chateau of the surrounding area was wonderful.

Dear sir, We would like to thank you for your positive review about the visit of Chateau de Montsoreau. We are indeed a Contemporary Art Museum not at all a art gallery. Best regards

Its not hard to succumb to the charms of this village as you gaze over the majestic river that bestows such irresistible charm and softness on this little town. The centrepiece, is the impressive chateau which displays an elegant facade inspired by Italian Renaissance.
In the mornings a mist rises from the Loire which envelops the watcher with gossamers of gold shafts and a harmony of soft hues. The village is fortunate in quarrying the white Tuffeau from which both the chateau and village houses are built from..
Fabulous mushrooms are sold at the Sunday food market, a great offshoot to the important tourist attraction of 21 Troglodyte dwellings, which are owner occupied by villagers and enjoy the modern trappings to create very cosy digs.
The village is a delightful place, on the banks of the river, nestled in the heart of the nature reserve. Aside from its church of Saint-Pierre-de-Rest and its splendid panorama , Montsoreau is also known for its competitions of boule de fort, a ball game invented in the 17th-Century by Spanish prisoners. Governed by strict protocol and lots of gentle humour, the game is played in a convivial spirit typical of the village.

I have visited this chateau numerous times in the past and enjoyed its depiction of the history of the Loire river - geology, history, commerce, etc. Reproductions of the old boats, music, even the fashion diorama were wonderful and very informative.
Now, all that has been stripped out and replaced with a schlock art exhibition - absolutely horrible! There has always been space for artwork displays - in the building across the courtyard from the chateau. Why wasn’t this done here?
The only thing left is the great view from the roof. But, wait a while until wiser heads redecorate. Don’t support this travesty with your 9.5 euros.

This castle is taken over by an exhibition which is a combination of the risible, such as an air-conditioner surrounded by 4 white walls, the offensive such as a young boy smoking, pseudo science such as mapping the world in terms of objectivisation, ultra-feminist claptrap encouraging women to throw off their role as child-bearers (who else can do it?), and as is usual nowadays, the blasphemous undermining and misuse of the Holy Bible. You can wash your mouth out in the convenient toilets afterwards.

Very disappointing. The contemporain art exhibition wasn't appreciated by anyone in our group of 8 people. The best part was the view from the top. Not worth 9 euros

A lovely chateau right on the banks of the Loire. The interior has been recently - and impressively - restored and now houses part of Philippe Méaille's engaging 'Art and Language' collection as well as the history of the chateau. The collection sits very well in the various rooms and is explained in English and French. The chateau also affords excellent views of the Loire and surrounding area. Both the building and the art collection would be worth a visit alone so to have them both together is quite a treat!

Château de Montsoreau is for art lovers, this contemporary art treatment of ancient heritage works brilliantly. Not only will you soak up an art movement which keeps your mind moving, its setting, collection and historic context gives you an interesting juxtaposition of past and present. The views from the top are breathtaking, with graffiti on the stone walls abound from all centuries giving you a continuum link to the exhibited collection ‘Art and Language’ where images, words, sentence constructions leave your mind stretched and stimulated. All perfectly presented and hung - complexities of language stretch your mind whilst the simplicity of high ceilings, light walls and space allow you to effortlessly float through the exhibited floors of this exquisite historical château.

We really enjoyed the clever use of space and use of multi media in the chateau and felt the visit was good value for money at just over 9€ each. The view from the top of the chateau was worth the price of admission it itself. We also appreciated the effort that had gone into providing English translations of display information.
