Beautiful Shrine Dedicated to the White Snake
Dec 2020
The Shirohebi Shrine is one of my favorites in Iwakuni. This shrine is newer, well kept up, and is home to several of the famous White Snakes. I have been here numerous times and it's always fun to look at the snakes in their cages. The cages are beautifully set up and spacious. I would say this is more interesting then the White Snake Museum near the Kintai area. Another reason I like this shrine is since it is dedicated to the white snake, many of the statues resemble the snakes. This shrine is unique and worth visiting. It is not a far walk from the base or anywhere really if in Iwakuni.

A Must To See If In The Area
Nov 2017 • Solo
These rare white non-poisonous snakes are native to this river valley and found nowhere else in Japan. They are a naturally occurring white snake as they are truly beautiful. They are housed in a small building that is very easy to go through and behind glass enclosures. There are actually quite a few of them there and are worth a visit to go and see.

No, not the band

Don't get your hopes up thinking that Iwakuni has a museum dedicated to the iconic 1980's hair band White Snake. This museum is dedicated to the local white snake. It only takes a few minutes but it's great for kids and anyone who likes reptiles.

First time visiting the Shrine
Jan 2018 • Solo
I come to visit Iwakuni twice a year because my mom lives here. However, this is the first time I visited the shrine.

It is a Shintō shrine with all the Shintō elements. I first cleaned myself in the chozuya.

After praying, I returned to the main entrance passing the cage of the serpents and enter the mini-exhibition area. They ask for a contribution of 100¥ and there is a pamphlet in English. The exhibition area talks about the white snakes and there is an area with living serpents. In my opinion, best seen here than in the museum close to the Kintakyo bridge, though I would recommend visiting both places.

I took time to buy an amulet (omamori) wishing “fulfillment” to give to a friend.

White snake museum
May 2016 • Couples
Here are alives white snakes in the aquariums. It's like a serpentarium in Zoo. But also there are some kind of historical museum about simple village life. White snake was a sacrified animal in japanese village, because they helped to save food from mouses.

Kids liked seeing the snakes. It is a room with a large cage with a few snakes in it. Some encased skins and history all in Japanese so I couldn't read the history of the shrine.
