Rio San Juan trip

Small Fort with lots of history. Has a public library, and a museum. Must visit. Learned one can travel from El Castillo to Bluefields, Corn Island, it's about a six-hours trip on a small boat (panga).

Great views of the river
Apr 2018
You can really imagine what is was like to be part of this community during the time of this fort. It is accompanied by a small museum with artifacts. The views alone are worth the small price of admission.

If not, just for the views
Mar 2018 • Family
The views are extremely beautiful to begin with. We were able to run up the hill leading to the entrance in time to catch sunset from atop the fort. We were not disappointed. We could see the river as it stretched towards lake Nicaragua and the Caribbean Coast. As the golden rays set down, the town became sleepy, with the boats making their final passes for the days. The following day we were able to go to the museum and explore more of the fortaleza. It was definitely worth it!

Historic Fort with good museum
Feb 2018 • Friends
Make sure that you visit the museum and understand the history and the reasons for locating the fort where it is to stop pirates like Capt. Morgan at the rapids. Cornelius Vanderbilt also transferred passengers going to and from the gold rush in California at this point.

Enjoyable visit
Feb 2018 • Couples
Built between 1673 and 1675 in a strategic location just above the town of El Castillo, this restored photogenic monument is a worthwhile visit. There is a simple but informative museum explaining the history of the building in Spanish and English and the short walk up to the castle itself affords great views over the rapids and the San Juan river. Entry to the castle and museum is 45 Cordoba per person, plus 25 for a lcamera.
The whole visit will take around an hour maximum.

If you come to El Castillo, you should see the El Castillo
Dec 2017 • Solo
The ‘highlight’ of El Castillo is the ‘el castillo’ (the little castle). The entrance fee is N$45 which includes entry to a small ‘museum’. If you want to take photos with your smartphone, that is OK. BUT, you will be charged an extra N$25 to take photos with a proper camera.

If you're in El Castillo...
Dec 2017 • Couples
You probably should visit the fort. It's a couple of bucks and really is pretty cool. They have put in a room since my last trip which gives a lot of history of the area. This is a very welcome improvement. I wouldn't venture to El Castillo solely to see the fort, but if you're there anyway make the climb.

Great views and an interesting museum
Jul 2017 • Family
Take binoculars up to the fort and spend a while doing some birdwatching- its a superb vantage point. The small museum carefully explains the town's history- all very interesting for somewhere which appears to be in the middle of nowhere but at various times was a key place to be.

Breathtaking Views, Impressive Fort, with an equally impressive Museum
Jul 2017 • Solo
Must see for anyone visiting El Castillo. For history or architecture lovers, it's a gem. The museum is really great too, very professionally done, with nice English translations to the side of the placards. Go there man!
