About
Notre Dame Gate is a grand baroque military gate built into the 17th century Cottonera Lines to protect the Three Historic Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua. It is of monumental proportions being built on five levels. From its roof one can observe a good part of the island including Valletta and the whole of Cottonera. Over the centuries it has served as the main gate for the region, a military barracks, a gun powder magazine, a chapel, an air raid refuge and throughout World War One during and after the Gallipoli Campaign an extension to the nearby Cottonera Military Hospital. This gate now houses the headquarters of Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna - the Malta Heritage Trust. It is available for visiting once a week as part of a guided tour every Wednesday starting at 10am. This tour also includes a visit to the former Cottonera Military Hospital and parts of the Cottonera Lines.

This is a nice gate, but certainly not the most impressive one. Worth a quick stop. You can climb to the top.

We were lucky to get a guided tour of the gate which is the highest point on the Cottonera Lines. The Guide was very informative about the history and current aspirations for the Gate. The venue is not generally open so you need to contact WirtArtna direct for details of availability.

We have often seen this magnificent Baroque gate on the horizon, not knowing what it was, but only recently took the trouble to visit it and it is well worth it. It was actually built in the late 1600's. On a sunny day, the views of Valletta and the Grand Harbour are fantastic. The height advantage helps to bring history, the Cotonera Lines, the Military Hospital to life.

I drive passed this structure at least 4 or 5 times a week and never realised that you could go inside. Parking is somewhat haphazard as located on a main roundabout but don't let 'tis put you off. The building has survived bombs and redevelopment taking place all over the island , a stunning piece of history located on the edge of the 3Cities.

You would think this is on of the Birgu city gates, but it is not. It is one of the seven gates built into the fortified lines. Today it is the headquaters of the Malta Heritage Trust. From the top you have a marvelleus view over the 3 cities.

Nice place to visit if you are nearby. I would not travel just to see Notre Dame Gate by itself, but if you are nearby - go check it out!

Not a place "must visit" but if you happen to be in area go and visit. Is the main gate of the Cottonera Lines, located in Birgu, was built in 1675 in the Baroque style, and it is currently used as the headquarters of the heritage organization Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna.

Had the pleasure to visit this gate thanks to a tour organised by Heritage Malta. The tour focused more on the purpose it served in WW1, that of a military hospital(together with what nowadays is St.Edward's School). The tour guide further explained to us the history behind this gate and how it was built during the construction of the cottonera lines. Once you learn more about it, its functions and get a chance to go inside too, then you'd appreciate this gem more.
