The cellar is located in the centre of an interesting little historic village. The house and winery go back to the 1600's and are now owned by Dr Charles Janbon. He makes red, rose and white wine mostly named after his grandchildren. Charles is a dedicated and enthusiastic winemaker who is passionate about his craft. We were encouraged to visit while we were wandering around the village. We popped back the next morning and were welcomed by the owner and his American summer helper/intern Chris. We tried out our French but Charles speaks English very well. The 2 of them explained carefully about each wine as we tasted it, telling us about the grapes and proportions of each and how they are grown; all really interesting. The wines were all excellent and we ended up buying quite a few cases of each to bring home. The owner also took my ife and friends over to his house, across the courtyard, to look around. It was quite ancient with great big fireplaces and stone floors; he even has a Model T Ford in one of the storage areas. He even lent me a trolley to cart my cases back to the car. Charles is also an interesting character having been a Vascular specialist in Montpellier for many years before taking on the family business.
Once you have completed your tasting then go round the corner to a wonderful little restaurant called the Cafe du Midi for lunch. 4 courses served all at once on a wickerwork tray in a beautiful courtyard setting. With aperitifs and wine the bill came to just a touch over £10 a head and that days main course, duck, was some of the nicest we had in the area.
A total experience of France in half a day.
