Me and my partner came to La Gomera in hopes of a quiet getaway somewhere remote.
We found a remote island yes, however the people are the absolute rudest people I have ever met. I speak Spanish (not 100% but enough for my travels through Spain) and the people would still not engage with us. We resorted to speaking Irish as it was easier than being looked up and down for speaking English (not our fault we were colonised).
From the moment you step on the beach every head turns and the conversations then turn into whispers about us (again, I speak Spanish) we tried to pay no attention to this but at a certain point it becomes demoralising and hard to want to do anything.
The only thing we could do was go on hikes as there was no residents there and we could finally not feel strange. My partner is French and struggles with Spanish (her fourth language) and she was openly laughed at in the supermarkets by both staff and residents for not speaking perfect Spanish and this killed her confidence to the point she stopped speaking all together.
One supermarket in particular the woman followed me and her up each and every isle to watch us (we were looking for a cold drink and something to cook as eating out wasn’t an option)
Overall I would say if you are Irish don’t go here. They assume you’re English and make you feel horrible for it, they don’t want to try speak Spanish with you and they look at you strange if you’re not as tan as them (Racism?)

This valley needs well targeted investment before it dies of neglect and the last of the population leave forever. A once vibrant community now decimated by emigration in the face of poor employment opportunities. The valley is deserted by its original inhabitants and littered with empty buildings with optimistic “se vende” graffiti scrawled on their walls. Limited eating and drinking and in our experience all closed by 10pm. If you fancy a glimpse of post-apocalypse life visit here.

It’s a rocky beach (15-cm rocks!) with no sand and massive waves that sound like thunder when they break. That’s in November and things may be different in other seasons, but swimming here in November looks totally impossible to me. Nevertheless, I do recommend this beach for the views and the wonderful surroundings. That’s why I’m giving it two stars: zero for its swimming conditions (which is what you would normally want to do on a beach) and four because it’s really beautiful.

This was a two night stopping area for us on our walking holiday en route to San Sebastián from Vallehermoso. The proximity of the sea to the mountains is fabulous and lends itself to the banana plantations on the valley floor. There are supermarkets and restaurants to supply the needs of the hiker. Very enjoyable.

Interesting drive with good views from above the town. The town is not that big, but there are shops and restaurants, a Spar supermarket and a nice bakery. Ok for a drive to see what this part of the island looks like. As someone mentioned most the roads have lots of curves and are narrow. Not fast roads for sure.

We stayed here for a week. The views are amazing, on one hand the beautiful green valley and the mountains, on the other the Atlantic. Incredibly peaceful place to relax. Loved it.

Hermigua ia a small town in a wonderful setting. The town itself is a typical small agriculture big village/small town. What makes it memorable are the walking trails that are all marked and offer stunning views of the valley, the coast and looking across to Mount Teide in Tenerife. We spent three hours walking a trail. Lots of undulations but not overtaxing. It never felt unsafe in terms of heights or scree. Over the three hours, we passed two couples. Otherwise we had the place to ourselves in all its beauty and stillness.
