The historic center is interesting, but most of the attractions were closed. There is no information on the internet. In museums, there are no external signs informing visiting days and times.
Furthermore, the streets are dirty and smelly. Many homeless residents defecate on public roads and sidewalks. Public bathrooms could be installed in some squares.

From my point of view, the most interesting place in the historic centre of São Luís is the Largo do Carmo, where the church of the same name is located. You can see old buildings, still with some facades still with original tiles. It is a pity that, as with the rest, the square with its buildings did not deserve the care of either the government or the owners. Unfortunately, preserving our history is not part of the Brazilian culture.

It is an amazing place, which is worth the experience. Old casarios, tiles with details, lots of culture. Although there are casarios that are not in good condition, practically in ruins, they have their beauty. We didn’t feel insecure at any time and I didn’t see places with human stools, as stated in some posts here.
It is a place that in a few hours you know everything, do not reserve much time for this tour.

It is very beautiful, there are a lot of interesting things to see but there are still many abandoned houses that have been destroyed by time. Many historic mansions were renovated and transformed into craft stores with lots of souvenirs and others became restaurants. For a walk, it's worth spending half a day and getting to know it.

I left 1 day to the historic center and spent 3 hours to see everything. I found everything very dirty, garbage in the tea, there was a lot of coconut on the floor, few good restaurants open. Regret having scheduled my transfer pra 17h. I wanted to leave for half a day.

Some really cool buildings, especially with the azulejos. Much has been repaired and restored; much has not. Beautiful buildings sit beside crumbling wrecks, or construction sites. Safe, gritty. Good for walking around.

The Historic Center is one of the best historical experiences in Brazil. Although there are some deteriorated properties and modifications in some sections, the number of mansions, streets, museums and squares is quite significant. The entire set forms a beautiful and magical look. Highlights include the unwired night lighting on many streets and yellowish lamps.

I discovered the center 11 years ago and now I recognize that it is much better. Better preserved and seemed even safer to me. Many mansions have been renovated and house cultural institutions, restaurants, etc. There is still a lot to do, but it has improved.

The Historic Center of St. Louis is very beautiful. I think better preservation of buildings is missing, but the tiles that cover them are a wealth of detail. The balconies are beautiful! The Church of the Se and the Palace of the Lions must be visited with Guide.
