I think Calhau is one of the main beaches of São Luis, this island is amazing with lots of ocean options. Because of Litoranea Avenue, Calhau has many good restaurants, the beach is shallow with nice waves, beautiful people all around and exquisite food.

I'm visiting São Luis the third time, the last time we opened this beach for us. The beach is clean, comfortable and has many restaurants. We are using Landruá.

If you compare its structure with other beaches in the country, you're gonna see this beach is easy to access and has nice bars. But the problem begins once in the sand, the sewage flows through it all. It's disgusting. I'm not talking about trash, like bottles, because in the case they clean it well. Some people bath in the... More

The beach experience is amazing. Lovely bars and restaurants along the beach - the water can be a bit hit and miss though - it is heavily polluted and also suffers from the currents lifting the sand and creating a cloudy/dirty looking water.

Not exactly crowded, this beach lets you spread your 'chute if you are a kitesurfer, get your hair blown sideways in the strong onshore trade winds, leave no footprints on miles of hard sand, swim in a warm ocean to cool off if you are a strong swimmer, and finally stop at a beach kiosk for food and beer.

Nice place. Nothing spectacular. The side closest to downtown is not suitable for bath. Also, it can be dangerous, due to strong currents

Considering to other beaches in Brazil, Calhau is far from even being comparable. It´s unfit for bathing, does not has much structure and security around. Not recommended even by local people. You don´t see anybody enjoying the beach during the day. Maybe it´s worth for background in photos =)

The beach is lined with many seafood restaurants which you can use as a base for an afternoon on the beach, but the tide in São Luis is so drastic that at the time of our visit, there was hardly enough water to make ourselves wet! Compared to a beach city like Salvador where the water is clear and local... More

Standard snack bars serving drinks and food. Multipurpose music and low infrastructure.
