I love to learn about the history of the city that I'm visiting. Besides the bright colors and the view I enjoy going into the different types of museum learning about the history of this beautiful city

This beautifully restored and maintained mansion is well worth a visit, and the lady who guided us round spoke excellent English and was very generous with her time. It really helped bring to life the history of the house and the area. The only note of caution is to be careful getting there and away, as it is not in the best area of town. It is well worth the effort though, and our guide gave us a lift to the taxi rank in a better part of town afterwards, as she was leaving then as well. Very kind and much appreciated.

a longer time to see everything you need. However the tour was not good and with a lazy guide and did not give much information or answer our questions.

This museum is an old residence, build in XIX century, by a rich local family and since then it had 3 different owned till it was acquire by the Government of Maranhão and transformed in Museum in 1973. It is a very typical construction of those times and it gathers a very good collection of furniture, pictures, china and objects .Touring the rooms with the amazing guides that accompany you, you can figure out how life was in those times. A special mention goes to the guides : they are well prepared and know a lot about the Brazilian history and the historical local events and habits of those times. Even for me that have studied in Brazil and have long lived in this country, I had to learn a quite a few things with these young guides.
Unfortunately the external part, the patio and garden and not well preserved.
Do not forget to have a look at a Picasso that was donated to the Museum and is hanging in the music room.
Overall is a place that is worth visiting

the museum is a very nice preserved house of a rich family of Sao Luiz. It is well organized and the guide is amazing extremely prepared on historic subjects! If something can be improved it is probably the garden. Unfortunately part of the museum was not accessible, but still the best historic place we have seen in town.

We spent 1,5 hours inside and didn´t get very excited. They got some interesting stuffs from colonization time, but this kind of places do need good guides to make you feel the history on your skin. Unfortunately, that was not my case.. the guide was slow and didn´t pass the emotion through her speech.
You pay R$ 10,00 or R$ 5,00 if you´re a senior or student from community school.

I don't find the history of the shame of slavery at all pleasant or interesting, much less making monuments that indirectly praise the classism, racism and elitism of the Portuguese Empire. The approach is very Eurocentric.
