Mardin castle sits on top of a pretty high hill above Mardin town. It dates back even to Roman era, being enlarged over the centuries.
However, today it's only for military purposes, so you cannot access it, likewise another viewpoint which is towards the Saffron Monastery.
The castle looks amazing at night when it's all illuminated.

Mardin is like a fairy tale, like a painting, so many details to see, lovely, helpful and friendly people everywhere. Walk through the lovely streets to Mor Behnam (Kirklar) church, stroll along the "main street", the jewel shops are incredible, so are the varieties of coffee brands, soaps and all kinds of local products (like sumac). Eat local specialities like "icli köfte" (wheatballs filled yith spicy minced beef) or filled ribs. Mayhurma is a unique desert you can get only in Mardin, made of dates and grape syrup. The archeological museum is small, but even worthwile to visit because of it's beautiful building. Beautiful artifacts!

As others have said, the castle is presently closed to the public. The walk up to it is heavy going, but it is worth it for the view towards Syria, and of the beautiful city of Mardin itself. The creamy limestone is such a sharp contrast to the black basalt of Diyarbakır!. Visited in May.

Although this place is one of the best spots for a vista of Syrian valley, it is a military base for decades and you cannot visit the castle itself. Depending on the security situation in the region you can climb up close to the doors. But why the trouble, esp when tou have lots to see and have a good view of the calley from almost any rooftop!

Closed due to being used by military. Seems to have been closed for renovations and then due to problems in Syria taken over by Turkish army.

Unfortunately at this time, access by the general public and tourists is not permitted.
The total area is used by the military forces.
However, it has recently been announced that the castle area will be vacated by the military, and access will be possible.
This will not be immediate however, and will take some time.
The castle is only one of the major cultural attractions in Mardin, and there is such a lot to see!

We hiked up the hill only to find that tourists do not have access to the Kale. If you want pictures of the Kale, find a good viewing place along the road and take them. If you want views of the city, go to the top of the stairs off the Main Street. The view is breathtaking, literally.

I traveled to Mardin with my sister in 2009. What a truly wonderful place it was. I only hope that it will survive the unrest in the region.

Such a fabulous place. Steeped in history and definitely somewhere I would love to return to.
