We had a morning tour with our fantastic guide José. There had been no rain for a while so the marshes were dry, however, Jose was able to spot a Spanish imperial Eagle, a crane flying overhead, vultures, numerous kites and marsh harriers and woodpecker. Jose miraculously managed to spot wildlife so easily and identify birds at a distance. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and will be revisiting in the spring once marshes are full. Thank you José

We are on a private tour with José. A super guide who shows the national park with a lot of passion, and sees every little animal. Unfortunately we couldn't find a lynx but it was still very worthwhile. And with the good binoculars and the beautiful car it was a great excursion.

There’s nothing like setting off in a 4x4 at dawn and watching the sun come up over the Donana. José was a very knowledgeable guide and explained about the history and ecology of the park, as well as the birds, animals and plants we were seeing. Highlights were barn owls sleeping in the base of a storks nest, flamingoes, a variety of kites and deer, hares and a foal just born (45+ bird types in total). There being only 4 of us in the group, we got to ask all our questions and to use José’s excellent binoculars and telescope. A wonderful ‘half-day’ (we were out for 5 hours!) and extremely good value.

There were two dimensions to our visit - El Rocio, and a full day of birding with Jose. While it all started in the interests of a day with Jose; El Rocio was a total surprise. El Rocio is a small town with numerous rustic hotels and restaurants typical of small spanish communities. The service we received (we do not speak Spanish) was courteous and efficient and the food was very good. The setting of El Rocio is a birdwatcher's paradise. In February 2020 we saw many individuals of many species including hundreds of glossy ibis, flamingo, spoon bill, waterfowl and waders in a huge wetland on El Rocio's doorstep. Birdwatching here is further facilitated by a grand promenade running the full length of the community's waterfront. In addition to all of this, the adjacent national park has a good trail boardwalk network connecting several well placed hides on shorelines of wetland. Jose went over the top in our day of birding; we covered a lot of ground in the park and adjacent agricultural lands. It started sunrise and ended at sundown with many bird sitings that I hoped for but did not expect - ie. little bittern, squacco, black stork, barn owl. Seeing hundreds of grey cranes in dozens of flocks was perhaps the highlight of the outing. Jose is very knowledeable on the birds of the area and his intimate knowledge of the varied habitats - both natural and agicultural lands put a lot of birds in our binoculars. Jose is also a diligent, considerate and very professional host. Ours was a very memorable day of birding in S. Spain.
